Enel SpA said Wednesday that its United States subsidiary has agreed with a subsidiary of Maire Tecnimont SpA to build a green-hydrogen production plant in the country.

Enel Green Power North America Inc. and NextChem signed a memorandum of understanding to build the plant, which is expected to be operational in 2023, Enel said. The plant will use energy produced by one of EGPNA's solar plants to produce green hydrogen, which will be supplied to a biorefinery.

NextChem will serve as an engineering, procurement and construction contractor, Enel said. The agreement represents the first application of a framework cooperation agreement between the two partners, which has a scope for joint projects including the testing of advanced technologies to increase the efficiency of producing green hydrogen with renewable energy.
