The trio of basketball, baseball, and American football have had a stranglehold on its popularity in North America for a long time. Soccer is one of the sports which has been emerging as an alternative in recent years. There are now plenty of avenues to bet on the sport. It is not just sufficient that a bettor knows about the existence of sportsbooks which accept bets on MLS. The bettor also has to know about offers, which are usually handed out by a promo code. There needs to be awareness about how to use this code on DraftKings.com and other top bookmakers.

Especially after the 1994 World Cup, the popularity of Major League Soccer has been on a constant upstream. A league which began with just 10 teams back in the mid-1990s has now grown to a stage where there are 27 teams competing across two conferences. There are more teams set to step into the world of MLS. One can ramp up their excitement and entertainment from the game even further by choosing to bet on the games. For a newcomer to the world of MLS betting, some basics need to be learnt.

MLS format and setup

The MLS in the modern format comprises of two conferences – eastern and western. There are 27 teams which take on each other in home and away matches. This effectively means that each team will be playing 34 games per season. At the end of the campaign, teams that pick up the most number of points gets the Supporters’ Shield while home advantage is also offered in the play-offs. The play-offs will begin just after the regular campaign and it is used to help determine the MLS Cup winner.

The league it takes into account the contribution from many players in multiple avenues. There would be records maintained for top scorers, Most Valuable Players, more.

The number of games in a league campaign is only set to go up higher, as new franchises are brought into the division. The 2022 season will see the entry of Charlotte FC, while St Louis City SC will be joining a year later.

How to bet on the MLS

For those who want to bet on the MLS, it makes sense to focus on the type of odds and betting tips which are available and popular.

Moneyline bets

The moneyline bets will be used to pick the winner of a game. Since there is a possibility of a draw in soccer, the three-way money line bets are especially popular with draws often receiving higher odds. A bettor has to pick just one of the three possible outcomes to take part in this betting type.

Totals or over/under betting

The goals are key ingredient of soccer, as they are used in place of points. This betting type makes it easy to choose the total goals predicted in the game. The common spreads in the over/under market would be 1.5 and 2.5. Therefore, bettors will be backing over 1.5/under 1.5 goals, over 2.5/under 2.5 goals, and more.

Futures betting

Even though the MLS season runs from March to December, the opportunity to bet on the market begins well ahead in advance. There are opportunities to place wagers on the MLS Cup winner several months in advance. These would obviously give better returns than placing pre-match bets.
