A $173.7 Billion Gaming Industry: Breakdown in Terms of Contribution

Just like it has been for a number of years now, Mobile games, aka smartphone games continued to dominate the gaming industry by contributing roughly US$79 billion to the total revenue generated by the gaming industry (US$173.7). This indicates a market share of 45.45%. Considering the fact that Consoles managed to contributeonly US$49.2 billion (28.32%), while the PC capped out at an even lower US$35.9 billion (21% approx.), it is obvious that the market domination of smartphones are not going to go away anytime soon.

A Surprising New Development

Tablets were thought to be dead within the IT sector for a long time and aside from Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft, very few OEMs release even one flagship model a year these days. However, as per reports confirmed by Mordor Intelligence, tablet games have generated a revenue of US$2.6 billion (1.5%) in 2021. Most of the revenue cited was generated from Apple’s line of iPads though. Microsoft’s Surface tablets are fully-fledged Windows PCs, so they do not count as tablets in this comparison.

Online Casino Games Generated Over US$7 Billion Last Year

According to another report published by the IMARC Group, the online gambling industry generated over US$72.3 billion in revenue last year. Casino games alone generated over US$7 billion in 2021, with live casinos topping the chart among casino games. As for the remaining US$61+ billion, most of that credit goes to sports betting. The grand sum was generated through bets that were made on soccer/football, horse racing, and e-sports for the most part.

Consequently, online casinos are now offering even better bonuses than before because they are growing in size and profit. The Lucky Nugget Casino, for example, has started offering a 150% match in bonus credits to new players, capped at NZ$200. 50% – 100% was the norm last year, but that is clearly changing.

Biggest Companies in the Gaming Sector

While their net value might contradict their present rate of revenue generation, the biggest companies in the field of video games for the year 2021 are as follows:

  1. Sony
  2. Microsoft
  3. Nintendo
  4. Tencent
  5. EA

After a massive surge in 2020, it seems that Tencent is still going strong, but not at the same pace as it wasin 2020. Sony and Microsoft,on the other hand, are expected to top the chart in 2021, thanks to their super successful release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X consoles. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft can catch up by the end of 2022, although that is very unlikely on account of the PS5’s unique and overwhelming popularity.
