Euro Crisis: Greeks vote to back Euro-Bailout

A pro-bailout coalition government could be formed in Greece following the second election in six weeks.

The centre-right New Democracy party gained the largest vote share with 29.5% with the pro-bailout socialists and former governing party Pasok on 12.3%.

The formation of a pro-bailout government may lead to the Eurozone providing Greece with further financial aid.

Calling for a “salvation government” New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras argued that support for the bailout programme allows for Greece to be brought “back to prosperity”.

The result means that New Democracy now has 128 seats, due to the Greek constitution awarding 50 seats to the party with the largest vote share, and Pasok 33 giving the potential government 161 of the 300 seats in the chamber.

Greece’s leading anti-bailout party Syriza achieved 27.1%, translating to 72 seats.

The election was held as the last delivered a result that did not allow for a government to be formed.

After the result was announced the International Monetary Fund stated that it will “stand ready to engagewith the new government” and German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle indicated that whilst “there can’t be substantial changes” to the bailout and that “Greece must stick to what has been agreed” talks about changing time axes could take place.
