UK GfK consumer confidence index rose as expected in December

In the UK, the GfK consumer confidence index advanced to -22.00 in December, at par with market expectations and compared to a level of -24.00 in the previous month.

The BoE left its interest rate steady

The BoE kept its interest rate unchanged at 5.25% for the third straight time and indicated that interest rates would need to stay elevated for an extended period to contain inflation.

The ECB kept its interest rate unchanged

The ECB kept its interest rate steady at 4.50% for a second straight session, as widely expected. Moreover, the central bank lowered its inflation projections for 2023-24.

US initial jobless claims dropped more than anticipated in the week ended 08 December 2023

In the US, initial jobless claims fell to 202.00K in the week ended 08 December 2023, compared to a revised level of 221.00K jobs in the previous week. Markets were expecting jobless claims to drop to 220.00K.

US retail sales unexpectedly rose in November

In the US, retail sales unexpectedly advanced 0.30% on a MoM basis in November, compared to a revised fall of 0.20% in the previous month.
