Forty minutes is a long time to hold your breath, but there’s a bunch of us doing it right now. The FTSE has been riding high above the 6840 mark for most of the day. If it finishes above 6840.27, it will be the index’s highest close since 30 December 1999.
About two hours ago the index topped out a two hour run at 6867.42 before drawing back in rather quick fashion to 6826.1. As we approach the final 30 minutes of trading, the FTSE has recovered with enough strength to reach 6841.1.
Oops, I just had to take another breath.
Watching Man U may be exciting in its own way, but not much beats what we are witnessing right now. It looks like it’s going to come down to the wire as the index is like a football going to and fro as it is kicked down the field. One minute it is at 6841. The next it is at 6838. Then back across the 6841 line, and now at 6839. Now down dramatically to 6837 just above yesterday’s close. And now, with less than 30 minutes to go, the index dives to 6831. Does it have enough left in it for one last gasp.
Now it is 6828 and time is running out. At 6826, there simply may be too much to overcome before time runs out. And now, at 6822, is all hope lost?
One more deep breath and let’s go for it!
Back now at the 6830 mark and with only 10 more points to go, but our progress is being held back. With less than a minute to go, it looks like the record will have to wait for another day. The FTSE closed at 6830 .07, not only missing the record, but falling short of yesterday’s closed of 6836.73.
It was an incredible day. Perhaps tomorrow will prove to be the winner.
