German exports grow in January

Sector records 3.1% in January compared to same period in 2012

German exported commodities rose to 88.6 billion euros and imported commodities to the value of 74.9 billion euros in January 2013.

Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that German exports increased by 3.1% and imports by 2.9% in January 2013 on January 2012. Upon calendar and seasonal adjustment, exports increased by 1.4% and imports by 3.3% compared with December 2012.

The foreign trade balance showed a surplus of 13.7 billion euros in January 2013. In January 2012, the surplus had amounted to 13.2 billion euros. In calendar and seasonally adjusted terms, the foreign trade balance recorded a surplus of 15.7 billion euros in January 2013.

According to provisional results of the Deutsche Bundesbank, the current account of the balance of payments showed a surplus of 11.3 billion euros in January 2013, which included the balance of services (–1.0 billion euros), factor income net (+5.4 billion euros), current transfers (–5.1 billion euros), and supplementary trade items (–1.9 billion euros). In January 2012, the German current account showed a surplus of 11.0 billion euros.

In January 2013, Germany dispatched commodities to the value of 52.0 billion euros to the Member States of the European Union (EU), while it received commodities to the value of 46.9 billion euros from those countries.

Compared with January 2012, dispatches to the EU countries increased by 2.1% and arrivals from those countries by 4.6%. Commodities to the value of 34.3 billion euros (+0.4%) were dispatched to the Euro area countries in January 2013, while the value of the commodities received from those countries was 32.3 billion euros (+2.8%).

In January 2013, commodities to the value of 17.7 billion euros (+5.5%) were dispatched to EU countries not belonging to the Euro area, while the value of the commodities which arrived from those countries was 14.6 billion euros (+8.7%).

Exports of commodities to countries outside the European Union (third countries) amounted to 36.6 billion euros in January 2013, while imports from those countries totalled 28.0 billion euros. Compared with January 2012, exports to third countries increased by 4.5% and imports from those countries by 0.2%.
