Strengthening UBIC’s Positioning in Asian Markets

UBIC, Inc. (Nasdaq:UBIC) (TSE:2158), a leading provider of international litigation support and big-data analysis services, today announced that the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office recently issued two Notifications of Allowance to the Company for patent applications related to technologies powered by UBIC’s AI engine known as “KIBIT”.

The necessary procedures for patent registration have already been executed, and the patents are currently pending issuance. UBIC has previously obtained Japanese patents for these systems (patent registration number: 5592552; registration date: August 8, 2014; patent registration number: 5622969; registration date: October 3, 2014), so the Taiwan patent approvals mark the expansion of UBIC’s IP protection for these technologies into a second country.

KIBIT integrates “landscaping” with a vast knowledge base. While landscaping is the application of a wide array of AI-based technologies, the knowledge base is the hard-earned result of systematized data analyses based on UBIC’s concept of Behavior Informatics. The two components enable KIBIT to identify the users’ “kibi” from small data sets pre-selected from each user. Kibi is a Japanese word related to the tacit knowledge of individuals, their judgment systems, and subtle perceptions and feelings.

UBIC has obtained two Taiwan patent approvals for the Company’s unique technology powered by KIBIT. The two patented features of KIBIT enable users to conduct real-time communication analyses and identify subtle signs which would normally go unnoticed when people audit e-mails. As a result, users can now prepare reports concerning the timing, situation, and possibility of fraud occurrence with minimal effort.

UBIC places particular emphasis on protecting its intellectual property. The Company has safeguarded the unique brand identity it has created over the years by developing innovative, cutting-edge technologies and services related to data analysis and providing these to an expanding, worldwide client base. As of September 4, 2015, no less than 79% of its patents have been filed in foreign countries. It is an important goal for UBIC to expand and strengthen its competitive positioning in Asia for its big data analysis business, and international litigation support is a key component of this goal. Thus, the Company will continue to develop and defend its IP rights across Asia.

“We believe that this patent is a testament to the superior innovation that underlies the highly-accurate document analysis provided by UBIC,” stated UBIC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Masahiro Morimoto. “In this advanced digital age, when the processing of vast volumes of data is necessary, our cutting-edge technology will open up new business frontiers, such as corporate fraud investigation and email auditing. UBIC aims to provide data analysis solutions in a broad range of new fields, including health care, intellectual property evaluation support and national security. By further honing our AI-based technologies and expanding our portfolio of intellectual properties, UBIC will continue to provide additional value-added eDiscovery services to customers worldwide.”
