Lamprell – much more than jackups

The Lamprell family moved to Dubai in 1976. For the first two decades they focused on small offshore energy sector projects, ranging from repair and modification of drilling rigs to accommodation modules and the overhaul of cranes, winches and other rig machinery.

Jackup oil drilling rigs came onto the scene in 1989 (see last Newsletter). At first, Lamprell (LSE:LAM) just offered rig conversion and refurbishment, but in 2006 started building rigs from scratch.

Alongside jackups the company developed construction capabilities for more complex topside process modules and turret assemblies for floating oil platforms.

Move into renewables

Skills picked up in constructing giant structures able to withstand the tough environment of offshore oil and gas were found useful in the renewable energy sector, grown since 2007. Output here has included self-propelled, self-elevating lift boats and wind farm installation vessels.

The low-cost base in UAE, with its South Asian engineers and fabricators, meant that these could be constructed at a competitive price for shipment to the other parts of the world. The same logic applied when they started winning contracts for the delivery of North Sea topsides in 2-3 years ago.

For example, in November 2016 Lamprell won a contract from Scottish Power Renewables for the fabrication of jackets and piles for the East Anglia One Offshore Wind Farm of the southern North Sea. This is a large-scale project with 102 turbines, each 7MW, enough for 500,000 homes in total. Lamprell will fabricate 60 foundations (jackets and piles) in the UAE.

Harland and Wolff will perform jacket assembly works for Lamprell at their modern facilities in Belfast, prior to final delivery to ScottishPower Renewables. ScottishPower Renewables will then install the jackets foundation structures to facilitate later installation of the wind turbine generators offshore.

Deliveries are to be made between March and October 2018. The contract is valued at approximately US$225 million.
