Electric Aviation Demonstrations Launch in Hawai?i: BETA Technologies and Surf Air Mobility Partner on Landmark Demonstration Program; Hawaiian Airlines Supporting Evaluation ActivitiesJune 26, 2026 8:00 AM
Business Wire BETA Technologies are conducting market survey demonstration flights using the ALIA CTOL for approximately six to eight weeks, generating data and advancing community education on electric aviation in Hawai?i. Surf Air Mobility became the first Part 135 operator to commercialize electric passenger flights for scheduled service and On Demand charter. Surf Air Mobility Inc. (NYSE: SRFM) (“Surf Air Mobility”) and BETA Technologies (NYSE: BETA) ("BETA") announced the launch of an electric aircraft demonstration program in Hawai?i, with Hawaiian Airlines (NYSE: ALK), part of Alaska Air Group, providing support in key areas, such as sharing insights on Hawai?i cargo and passenger routes, participating in feasibility assessments, and supporting local stakeholder and community engagement activities. On Thursday, Hawaiian Airlines hosted the launch event for the trial at its Charles I. Elliott Maintenance and Cargo Facility at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. This was an important next step toward the deployment of these next-generation aircraft for real-world regional air service. This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20260626814207/en/BETA's ALIA CTOL aircraft flying in Hawai?i. BETA's ALIA CTOL electric aircraft has begun conducting demonstration flights across Hawai?i as part of an approximately six to eight-week flight campaign to evaluate the operational, economic and infrastructure requirements for future electric aircraft operations in the state. The program brings together BETA's electric aircraft technology, Surf Air Mobility's regional airline expertise as Mokulele Airlines, existing Hawai’i airport ground infrastructure, and SurfOSTM software. Hawaiian Airlines, Hawai’i's largest and longest-serving carrier, serves as a link between the islands, the continental United States, and international destinations across the Pacific. This landmark demonstration program will provide key learnings as to how electric aircraft could support future cargo and passenger operations across Hawai?i's interisland network. The demonstration program represents a commitment to understanding how new technologies can sustain strong transportation infrastructure with lower emissions and expanded energy alternatives with more stable prices than aviation fuel. BETA will conduct demonstration flights in Hawai?i and will share operational insights and learnings throughout the program. Hawai?i's short interisland route structure and established demand for regional air transportation make it an ideal environment to evaluate electric aircraft operations at commercial scale. Specifically, the program will generate data and operational learnings that help answer some of the most important questions surrounding the future deployment of electric aircraft, including: Aircraft performance across Hawai?i's routes, weather conditions, and operating environment Direct operating costs and economic factors that will help determine the commercial performance of future electric aircraft operations Maintenance requirements and servicing needs associated with operating electric aircraft in commercial service Battery performance, energy consumption, and operating costs across representative interisland missions Crew training and familiarization requirements, ground handling procedures, safety protocols, and charging infrastructure needs across the network The data generated through the program will support broader efforts to advance sustainable aviation solutions across the state. Kyle Clark, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of BETA Technologies, said: "Connecting the Hawaiian islands with low cost cargo and passenger service is a great application for electric advanced air mobility. These early demonstrations will showcase the utility and economics of the BETA ALIA aircraft firsthand to Surf Air and inform future high cadence, sustainable intraisland service.” Diana Birkett Rakow, Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiian Airlines, said: “Hawaiian Airlines has a deep and sustained responsibility not only to provide critical air service to, from and within the islands and to carry the spirit of Hawai‘i with us on the journey, we are also driven – with Alaska Airlines – to cultivate innovation and support the technologies that will enable a strong and resilient future for aviation. This program provides an opportunity to better understand how BETA’s electrified aircraft can support safe and reliable cargo and passenger air service for short-haul service while improving the environmental impact of that flying.” Deanna White, Chief Executive Officer of Surf Air Mobility, said: "The aviation industry has talked about electric flight for years. The question is no longer whether electric aircraft can fly, but rather how they can now be successfully integrated into commercial service. The data generated through this program will help define the operational, economic, and infrastructure requirements needed to advance the next generation of regional air transportation." Surf Air Mobility intends to deploy BETA aircraft throughout its Hawai?i operations for both cargo and passenger missions following FAA certification. Through its Mokulele Airlines subsidiary, the company operates Hawai?i's largest commuter airline network by airports served and departures, providing an established operational foundation for future electric aircraft deployment. As previously announced, Surf Air Mobility is preparing to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Hawai?i that, once certified, is expected to serve as the factory-authorized service center for BETA aircraft in the state. The facility is expected to support long-term electric aircraft operations and help build the technical infrastructure necessary to scale commercial electric aviation. Akasa Air Targets Strong Expansion as It Navigates Aircraft Delivery Delays (ALK)June 23, 2026 8:54 AM
IH Market News Airline Plans 30% Capacity Increase for FY2027 Akasa Air (NYSE:ALK) is aiming to expand capacity by approximately 30% during the fiscal year ending March 2027, according to comments from the airline’s finance chief, as the carrier continues to grow despite ongoing aircraft delivery challenges. The Indian airline is also assessing potential participation in a government-backed emergency credit guarantee programme designed to support businesses affected by disruptions linked to the Iran conflict. Revenue Growth Continues to Outpace Market Expansion For the fiscal year ended March 31, Akasa reported a 37% increase in operating revenue, while available seat capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), rose by 30%. In the previous financial year, the airline generated revenue of 45.83 billion rupees ($483.39 million) and recorded a net loss of $209.16 million. The latest figures highlight the carrier’s continued expansion as it seeks to strengthen its position within India’s rapidly growing aviation market. Boeing Delivery Delays Remain a Key Challenge Founded in 2022, Akasa Air currently operates a fleet of 39 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and holds a 5.8% share of India’s domestic aviation market. The airline continues to face delivery delays from Boeing, which have affected fleet expansion plans across the industry. While management reiterated its capacity growth target, the company did not provide detailed guidance regarding future aircraft deliveries from the manufacturer. Government Credit Support Under Review Chief Financial Officer Ankur Goel said the company is evaluating whether to access a government programme that provides up to 181 billion rupees ($1.9 billion) in credit guarantees. The initiative was introduced to help airlines and businesses manage short-term liquidity pressures arising from the Iran war and its economic impact. “We have not drawn any funds from the … scheme as of now, but this is something we continue to work with the banks on and continue to work with the (Indian aviation) ministry,” Goel said. International Network Set for Further Growth International routes accounted for approximately 25% of Akasa Air’s total capacity during the past fiscal year. Management expects that figure to increase significantly over the coming years as the airline expands its overseas network and diversifies beyond the domestic market. According to Goel, international operations could eventually represent around 40% of the airline’s overall capacity. Building Scale in a Competitive Market Akasa continues to compete against dominant Indian carriers including IndiGo and Air India, focusing on fleet expansion, network development and market share growth. Despite supply-chain constraints and aircraft delivery delays, the airline remains focused on accelerating growth, increasing international exposure and strengthening its position within one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. Airlines Poised to Benefit from Lower Fuel Costs, but Cheaper Tickets May Be Slow to ArriveJune 22, 2026 6:40 AM
IH Market News Airlines could see a substantial reduction in fuel expenses following the decline in oil prices triggered by the interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran. However, passengers should not expect ticket prices to fall immediately, as constrained capacity may allow carriers to retain much of the recent fare increases. The situation is particularly evident in the United States, where ticket prices have not fully kept pace with the surge in fuel costs experienced earlier this year. With limited growth in domestic seat capacity, airlines have room to use lower fuel expenses to strengthen profitability rather than reduce fares. Fuel Prices Retreat Sharply U.S. spot jet fuel prices stood at $2.85 per gallon on June 17, a significant drop from the early-April peak of $4.88 per gallon. If maintained, such a decline could reduce the annual fuel bill for the U.S. airline industry by more than $40 billion, based on Reuters calculations using industry fuel consumption data. The reduction offers carriers a meaningful opportunity to improve earnings after a period of sharply rising operating costs. Airlines Have Not Fully Recovered Higher Fuel Costs Although airlines responded to rising fuel prices by increasing fares, charging higher baggage fees and trimming flight schedules, those measures only partially offset the additional expense. Industry figures show jet fuel costs increased more than three times faster than airfare prices between January and May. According to Deutsche Bank, U.S. airlines are expected to recover only around 60 cents of every extra dollar spent on fuel, translating into approximately $14.4 billion of additional revenue against $24.1 billion in higher fuel costs. Alaska Air (NYSE:ALK) said it had recovered roughly one-third of the increase. Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL), United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) and American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) estimated second-quarter recovery rates of between 40% and 50%, while JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ:JBLU) and Frontier Group (NASDAQ:ULCC) expect to recapture less than half of the additional costs. United Airlines chief executive Scott Kirby said his company is steadily closing the gap through pricing measures. “We’re on a path to recovering 100% by the end of the year,” Kirby told Reuters. Fare Levels Remain the Key Issue Data from Raymond James showed average domestic fares booked one week before departure were 34.1% higher than a year earlier as of June 8. The critical question for the industry is whether airlines can maintain those higher fares even as fuel costs decline. “What remains crucial is the ability to hold price,” said Melius Research analyst Conor Cunningham, adding that lower gasoline prices could reduce consumer sensitivity to elevated airfare levels. International Markets May See Different Outcomes Outside the United States, the impact of lower fuel prices is expected to vary by region. Dudley Shanley, head of aviation and travel research at Goodbody, said crude oil declines take time to filter through to jet fuel markets. Unless fuel prices return to levels seen at the beginning of the year, airlines are likely to keep fares stable or increase them where demand remains strong. In Europe, analysts expect long-haul ticket prices to face greater downward pressure because carriers have been more successful at passing on higher fuel costs on those routes. Short-haul fares may prove more resilient if the peace agreement stimulates demand and travel bookings. HSBC analysts noted that China’s largest airlines continue to face weak pricing power and lower aircraft utilisation rates, while Cathay Pacific could be better positioned thanks to stronger premium travel demand and cargo revenue. Middle East Airlines Face a Different Challenge The Middle East remains an exception after months of conflict disrupted air traffic patterns across the region. Aviation analyst John Strickland said some airlines may introduce promotional offers to encourage passengers to return, although fuel costs remain too high to support widespread discounting. He added that carriers in the United Arab Emirates may be able to pursue more aggressive pricing strategies with support from government-backed initiatives. Lower Fuel Costs Could Deliver a Major Earnings Boost Airlines’ financial gains will depend largely on how long lower fuel prices persist. Fuel purchasing is typically spread over time, meaning carriers do not immediately benefit from movements in spot markets. Moreover, despite recent declines, jet fuel prices remain 54% higher than a year ago, according to the International Air Transport Association. Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) chief operating officer Andrew Watterson highlighted the importance of fuel costs when discussing profitability. “When’s fuel going to go down?” Watterson told Reuters when asked about the timing of a return to pre-pandemic margins. Jefferies estimates that every 5% reduction in its projected 2027 fuel-price forecast of roughly $3 per gallon would increase earnings per share by between 10% and 15% for Delta, Southwest and United, while American Airlines could see earnings rise by as much as 50%. Capacity Constraints Reduce the Risk of a Fare War Historically, falling oil prices often triggered aggressive capacity growth among U.S. airlines, leading to lower ticket prices. This time, however, conditions appear different. Aircraft delivery delays, airport capacity limitations and a weaker low-cost carrier segment are restricting supply growth. Industry data show U.S. domestic seat capacity is expected to increase just 0.4% year-on-year in the third quarter, down sharply from the 4.6% growth projected before the latest Middle East tensions emerged. Analysts at J.P. Morgan said reduced aircraft deliveries and cutbacks by budget airlines lower the risk of “meaningful capacity creep” in the U.S. market, giving carriers an unusually strong ability to maintain pricing discipline. Ultimately, the outlook for ticket prices may depend less on fuel and more on consumer demand. “This is very much subject to the strength of the consumer,” Shanley said. Hawaiian Airlines elevates onboard service with pre-order dining by celebrated Hawai'i chefs, fresh fare across all cabins and complimentary local snacksMay 28, 2026 1:00 PM
PR Newswire (US) New First Class and Main Cabin pre-order dining delivers greater choice and better quality for guests James Beard Award finalist Chef Sheldon Simeon brings Hawai?i's flavors onboard with a new, locally inspired Main Cabin menu Huaka?i by Hawaiian members to enjoy two free meals as a mahalo for their loyaltyNew local snack partners elevate complimentary onboard offerings with island-made favoritesHONOLULU, May 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- As a continuation of Hawaiian Airlines' signature onboard hospitality, the airline is redefining island-inspired dining in the Main Cabin with a new onboard service program that delivers greater choice, improved quality and a deeper connection to the flavors of Hawai'i. Starting July 1, guests in Main Cabin on most flights between Hawai'i and the U.S. continent will enjoy pre-ordered meals from a fresh, chef-curated menu available for purchase. Hawaiian, which developed the program with Maui-based, James Beard finalist Chef Sheldon Simeon, is also introducing new locally made products and enhanced service elements – delivering a richer taste of Hawai'i and a service experience grounded in Hawaiian's signature Mea Ho?okipa hospitality."At Hawaiian Airlines, food has always been a core expression of our Hawaiian hospitality — our special way of welcoming guests onboard and inviting them into our island home," said Alisa Onishi, Managing Director of Hawai'i Marketing at Hawaiian Airlines. "We designed our new Main Cabin meal program based on guest preference for more control and choice, while allowing us to deliver food that better reflects the richness of Hawai?i's culinary traditions. By moving to a pre-order model, we're expanding beyond a single standard meal to offer a broader menu that reflects how our guests want to dine today."Chef-driven menu rooted in Hawai'i
The heart of Hawaiian's new dining program comes from its longstanding partnership with Chef Simeon, a nationally recognized restaurateur. Known for his beloved Maui restaurants, Tin Roof and Tiffany's, Simeon brings deep culinary expertise and a passion for celebrating Hawai'i's diverse food culture. His menu features elevated takes on local favorites and comfort foods, including dishes such as crispy mochiko chicken with garlic noodles, barbecue teriyaki chicken bento and corned beef hash with eggs. Many items highlight signature flavors from Simeon's restaurants, including his popular sauces, K mayo, teriyaki and banana bread syrup, as well as his popular crispy topping made from rice crackers and furikake."For me, food is about sharing where you're from and the people who shaped you," said Simeon. "This menu is inspired by the flavors I grew up with in Hawai'i — comforting, familiar and full of heart. I'm excited to bring those dishes onboard so guests can experience a true taste of home, wherever they're headed."Menu offerings deliver an experience that is both familiar and distinctly Hawaiian — grounded in culture and prepared with fresh local ingredients made no more than 12 hours before each flight."Chef Sheldon embodies the heart and soul of Hawai'i's culinary culture," Onishi added. "His approach to food is rooted in storytelling, community and a deep sense of place, which aligns perfectly with how we think about hospitality at Hawaiian Airlines — brought to life every day by our crews, who deliver exceptional service."In March, Hawaiian welcomed Chef Dell Valdez, the Hawai?i-born culinary leader behind Vein in Kaka?ako on O'ahu, as well as Dell's Kitchen & Bakery and Mio PASTALOGY, as the carrier's new Executive Chef. With Valdez overseeing Hawaiian's international Business Class and domestic First Class menus and Simeon designing the Main Cabin meal program, Hawaiian is offering a thoughtfully curated dining experience to guests in every cabin.More choice, better quality for guests
Rooted in Hawai?i and shaped by guest feedback, Hawaiian's onboard service evolution reflects its continued commitment to offering a more unified, elevated experience across every cabin while staying true to the brand's signature hospitality.Already offered in First Class, the pre-order model puts guests in control of their onboard dining experience throughout the cabin, with First Class guests now benefiting from an expanded selection of menu options. Through the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app or website, travelers can select meals up to two weeks in advance (and as close to 20 hours before departure), choosing options that best fit their tastes, preferences and dietary needs — including plant-based and gluten-free selections. The Main Cabin program will launch July 1 with a curated set of initial offerings, with plans to expand the menu this Fall. Throughout the year, Hawaiian and Simeon will introduce new dishes and rotate items, ensuring the menu remains fresh, relevant and reflective of seasonal ingredients and evolving guest preferences.Hawaiian hospitality remains at the core with new onboard partners
Hawaiian's award-winning Mea Ho?okipa hospitality — loved by guests — remains central to the inflight experience. Complimentary onboard touches will continue, including a welcome beverage, snacks by new local partners Anahola Granola and Diamond Bakery and a mahalo sweet treat from Hawaiian Host Chocolates or Honolulu Cookie Company served before arrival. In addition to complimentary alcohol for guests seated in Premium Class, Hawaiian will introduce new complimentary onboard bites for guests seated in Premium Class: Kaua?i-based Anahola Granola's Tropical Granola Bar, which features island favorites, papaya and pineapple, paired with honey-roasted oats. Main Cabin guests will enjoy Hawaiian shortbread macadamia nut cookies by Diamond Bakery, made in Hawai'i and crafted with rich, indulgent flavors served in the morning, and Hawaiian Maui onion kettle chips served in the afternoon.Designed with sustainability in mind
The new program also advances Hawaiian's commitment to caring for the 'aina (land). By aligning meal production with actual guest demand, the airline is reducing unnecessary food and packaging waste. Most meal packaging is compostable or recyclable, including fiber-based containers and materials that significantly reduce reliance on single-use plastics.Huaka?i by Hawaiian members enjoy first two meals on us
Hawai'i residents who are Huaka?i by Hawaiian members, or who become members by June 24, will enjoy a special, one-time offer to experience the new menu as part of the program launch. As a thank you for their continued loyalty, starting July 1, Huaka?i members who make a meal selection for an upcoming trip will automatically receive the first two items free of charge."We're excited to mahalo our Huaka'i members - all of whom are kama?aina and among our most loyal guests by inviting them to taste our new menu and be part of this exciting chapter of onboard dining with us," said Onishi. This evolution reflects something larger: Hawaiian's continued commitment to Hawai?i and to its guests. The airline continues to share local flavors, support local partners, and deliver hospitality with authenticity and care, while investing in modernized spaces, upgraded technology, refreshed Airbus A330 aircraft interiors and expanded community and sustainability efforts that will shape the future of the guest experience.MORNING MENU OPTIONS

PR Newswire (US) Alaska Airlines begins service to London today, marking a major milestone in the carrier's international expansion, with service to Reykjavík to follow on May 28, just weeks after launching nonstop service to Rome.Opening in late 2027, Alaska's landmark lounge at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport will be among the largest in the country, delivering a world-class, two-level experience designed for international growth and anchoring a multimillion-dollar investment across the airline's expanding lounge portfolio.SEATTLE, May 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines today launched daily nonstop service between Seattle and London Heathrow, reinforcing its position as the fourth largest global airline in the U.S. and strengthening its international network. The year-round service marks Alaska's second European destination introduced this year and begins just ahead of the busy summer travel season. Last month, the airline launched its first-ever transatlantic route to Rome, and on May 28, it will begin nonstop service to Reykjavík, Iceland. "As we connect the West Coast to Europe in new ways, our focus is on delivering a meaningful experience that feels distinctly Alaska – warm, thoughtful and elevated at every touchpoint," said Andrew Harrison, chief commercial officer at Alaska Airlines. "For our guests in the U.S., we're opening more convenient access to Europe with the airline they know and love, and for our guests in Europe and beyond, we're bringing our signature West Coast hospitality to every step of the journey, reflecting the comfort and care we're known for."Alaska's daily service will operate out of London Heathrow's Terminal 3, offering U.S.-based guests a seamless way to reach one of the world's most iconic cities or enjoy convenient connections to additional destinations across Europe and beyond on oneworld member and partner airlines. The new route also opens the door for UK travelers to explore the Pacific Northwest and connect beyond Seattle through Alaska Airlines' extensive West Coast network, including the Hawaiian Islands. When traveling internationally, Alaska Lounge+ members enjoy access to select partner lounges worldwide, including the Admirals Club at London Heathrow, while guests in Alaska's international business class Suites and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members can access partner lounges regardless of cabin."Every new route launched from Heathrow gives passengers and businesses more choice and stronger connections to the world," said Ross Baker, chief customer officer of London Heathrow Airport. "Alaska Airlines' new service to Seattle further strengthens our transatlantic network, opening up opportunities for travel and trade between the UK and the U.S. West Coast. Working closely with airline partners like Alaska is how we deliver the connectivity passengers and businesses want – and keep the UK competitive globally."Connecting these two cities with vibrant business communities will go beyond tech and finance workers. The cargo capacity enabled by this route will provide businesses in North America and the UK increased opportunities to move their goods across Alaska's extensive network. Whether it's seafood from Alaska and Hawaii or Northwest hops, the 787's capacity and Alaska Air Cargo's reputation for customer service will help strengthen the connection across the pond.On May 28, Alaska will launch nonstop, seasonal service to Reykjavík as its third European destination in its expanding global network. The daily route is timed to coincide with Iceland's peak summer season and will connect guests to one of the best viewing spots in the world for the August 2026 total solar eclipse. From Iceland, guests can easily connect to Alaska's many partner airlines to continue exploring Europe, including Icelandair, which offers more than 35 daily departures from the country's capital. The combined company's shared PSS serves as the central reservation technology that connects the digital tools and programs used by guests and employees; from websites, mobile app, Atmos™ Rewards and Huaka'i by Hawaiian loyalty programs, to airport kiosks and reservation records."We're doing something that no other U.S. airline has done before: Operating multiple brands on a single platform, and giving guests a smoother experience when they fly with Alaska and Hawaiian around the world," said Alaska Air Group CEO Ben Minicucci. "Credit to our teams who have worked for more than a year on this milestone that removes friction and unlocks the full strength of our combination moving forward."One App for All Your TravelsBeginning today, guests can manage their entire journey via a single Alaska Hawaiian mobile app, with the option to select either an Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines theme for the app's look and feel. Hawaiian's iconic Pualani will remain prominently displayed on digital channels and on airport signage, lobbies, gates and most information displays. Alaska Air Group reports first quarter 2026 resultsApril 20, 2026 6:53 PM
PR Newswire (US)

Led the industry in on-time performance in the first quarter
Extended Bank of America partnership, delivering improved economics and capabilities for our Atmos™ Rewards program
Premium revenue increased 8% year-over-year and over 90% of premium fleet retrofits completed ahead of peak summer travel seasonSEATTLE, April 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK) today reported financial results for the first quarter ending March 31, 2026.

"Even in a volatile quarter, we're seeing clear evidence that our long-term Alaska Accelerate plan is working," said CEO Ben Minicucci. "We're leading the industry in on-time performance, achieving a significant integration milestone with a single reservation system, generating incredible loyalty growth with Atmos Rewards and driving strong international demand as we launch service to Europe. I'm confident in our people, our plan, and our future."Quarter in Review:Air Group reported first quarter Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) pretax margin of (9.6)% and GAAP net loss of $193 million, or $1.69 per share. Our first quarter adjusted pretax margin was (8.6)% and our adjusted net loss was $192 million, or $1.68 per share.Q1 2026 Results

$(1.68)Air Group began the year with solid operating momentum, though first quarter 2026 results were impacted by sharply higher fuel prices and localized demand disruptions as a result of historic rainstorms in Hawai?i and civil unrest in Puerto Vallarta ahead of the peak spring break travel season. These markets represent approximately 30% of Air Group capacity. Despite these headwinds, demand remained resilient and the company continued to execute against integration priorities and Alaska Accelerate initiatives.First quarter revenue totaled approximately $3.3 billion, with unit revenue up 3.5% year-over-year despite a nearly 1 point headwind from Hawai?i and Puerto Vallarta. Premium demand continued to outperform as fleet retrofits and Starlink installations progressed. Managed corporate travel increased 19% year-over-year, supported by an expanding global network. Our international long-haul expansion continues to perform strongly with Seattle-Tokyo reaching profitability less than one year after launch and load factors exceeding 90% on both Seattle-Tokyo and Seattle-Seoul routes.Atmos Rewards membership and co-brand credit card remuneration both grew double digits year-over-year, with particularly strong momentum in Hawai?i. Further, our new long-term extension and expansion of our co-brand partnership with Bank of America improves economics and will drive incremental growth in cash remuneration for Air Group in 2026 and beyond.Unit costs increased 6.3% year-over-year, in-line with expectations, reflecting the final quarter of normalization for Alaska's 2025 flight attendant contract, as well as temporary impacts from weather-related disruptions. The quarter also delivered progress in core cost performance, including improvements in aircraft utilization, productivity, and maintenance execution, while returning to industry-leading operational reliability.  First quarter fuel costs increased materially due to elevated crude and refining prices, averaging $2.98 for the period. Excluding higher fuel costs and the one-time disruptions in Hawai?i and Puerto Vallarta, results would have exceeded the midpoint of original first quarter expectations.Second Quarter Forecast Information:For full year 2026, our visibility to earnings is limited due primarily to ongoing fuel price volatility. Until conditions stabilize and we have better sight to earnings beyond the current quarter, we have suspended full-year guidance. Similarly, for the second quarter, the range of potential financial outcomes remains wide and difficult to predict, as recent geopolitical factors have resulted in sharp and unpredictable changes in fuel prices. As a result, we're providing detailed assumptions on unit revenue and unit costs, in lieu of our traditional EPS guidance range.Second quarter capacity is expected to be up approximately 1% year-over-year, down nearly a point from original expectations, reflecting proactive trimming of capacity in May and June. Second quarter unit revenues are trending to be up high single digits year-over-year, with a path to increasing 10% year-over-year, assuming demand strength and yield trends sustain the rest of the period. This expectation is despite a 2-point unit revenue headwind from storms in Hawai'i that have impacted near term demand.Second quarter year-over-year unit cost performance is expected to be approximately 1.5 points higher than the first quarter, driven by close-in capacity reductions and several transitory factors. These include crew training costs associated with the ramp-up of international widebody flying, a year-over-year headwind from aircraft sale gains in the second quarter of 2025, and current year planned employee recognition expense tied to achieving a single passenger service system - an important integration milestone. Unit costs are expected to inflect downward in the second half of the year to low single-digit growth.Fuel remains the largest source of near-term uncertainty. April fuel is expected to be approximately $4.75 per gallon, and we expect the quarter to average approximately $4.50 based on the forward curve today. This assumption adds approximately $600 million of expense to the second quarter, equivalent to an earnings per share headwind of $3.60. We expect to consume approximately 297 million gallons of fuel in the quarter based on our current capacity plan. Our assumed tax rate is 32%, though this could change dependent on the full year outlook as we exit the quarter. Any tax accrual changes are not expected to have cash flow impacts, as we do not expect to incur cash taxes in the near term. Taken together, the revenue, cost, and fuel assumptions result in an adjusted loss per share estimate of approximately ($1.00). Absent the fuel price spike, we would have guided to a solidly profitable quarter.Despite the challenging near-term backdrop, Air Group continues to operate from a position of strength, supported by a healthy balance sheet, strong liquidity, approximately $20 billion in unencumbered assets, and disciplined capital allocation. Our continued focus on Alaska Accelerate initiatives to build scale, relevance and loyalty position us well to build a higher-quality, more durable revenue mix, while maintaining focus on cost discipline and operational excellence.Financial Results:Generated $421 million of operating cash flow in the first quarter.Repurchased 4.7 million shares of common stock for $203 million in the first quarter, with year-to-date repurchases totaling $250 million as of April 20, 2026.Had approximately $20 billion of unencumbered assets, including 124 aircraft and our loyalty program, at March 31, 2026.Made $340 million in total debt payments, including $113 million in prepayments in the first quarter.Ended the quarter with a debt-to-capitalization ratio of 61%, and trailing twelve months adjusted net leverage of 3.3x.In April, the Company exercised the accordion feature of its revolving credit facility, increasing total available commitments under the agreement from $850 million to $1.1 billion and increasing total liquidity to $2.9 billion.Operational Updates:Led the industry in on-time performance in the first quarter.First airline to install Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi on full Regional fleet, with the first equipped Mainline aircraft now in service and fleetwide completion expected by the end of 2027.Completed more than 90% of Boeing 737 cabin retrofits, with full completion expected by this summer.Alaska, Hawaiian, and Horizon maintenance teams earned the FAA's Diamond Award of Excellence, recognizing industry-leading teamwork and dedication to aviation safety, marking 25 years for Alaska and Horizon, and 5 years for Hawaiian.Commercial Updates:Premium revenue increased 8% year-over-year.Loyalty program cash remuneration increased 12% year-over-year.Managed corporate revenue increased 19% year-over-year.Our Seattle-Tokyo route reached profitability in March with load factors exceeding 90%, less than one year after its launch.Launched Alaska's new International Business Class on 787-9 aircraft with enclosed suites, elevated dining, and upgraded amenities, alongside refreshed Premium and Main Cabin offerings and planned Starlink connectivity.Launched a single Alaska-Hawaiian mobile app, simplifying booking, check-in, and day-of-travel management as part of the transition to a single passenger service system.Other Highlights:Announced the election of Lindsay-Rae McIntyre as Chief People Officer of Alaska Airlines, Inc. effective April 1, 2026.Supported the Hawai?i Community Foundation – Stronger Hawai?i Fund and the Hawaiian Council – Kako'o O'ahu to aid with immediate and long-term relief efforts related to the historic floods in Hawai?i.Atmos™ Rewards received multiple industry accolades, including Best Innovation in Airline Loyalty and Best New Personal Credit Card from The Points Guy, Best Airline Rewards Program of 2026 from NerdWallet, and Best Frequent Flyer Program of 2026 from WalletHub.Named to Glassdoor's 2026 list of Best Places to Work, highlighting our people-first, inclusive culture, career-growth pathways, and benefits.Named to TIME Magazine's 2026 list of America's most iconic companies.A conference call regarding the first quarter results will be streamed online at 11:30 a.m. EDT/ 8:30 a.m. PDT on April 21, 2026. 2.9x(a)Operating income can be reconciled using the trailing twelve month operating income as filed quarterly with the SEC.Note A: Pursuant to Regulation G, we provide reconciliations of reported non-GAAP financial measures to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures. We believe these non-GAAP measures provide meaningful supplemental information to investors for the following reasons:By excluding certain costs from our unit metrics, we believe that we have better visibility into our underlying operating results. The airline industry is highly competitive and characterized by significant fixed costs, so relatively small changes in operating costs can have a meaningful impact on results. Because U.S. carriers are generally similarly affected by changes in jet fuel prices over the long run, we believe it is important for management and investors to focus on company-specific cost drivers that are more controllable by management. We also adjust for costs related to our freighter aircraft operations, including costs incurred under the ATSA with Amazon, to enhance comparability with carriers that do not operate freighter aircraft. Certain special charges are excluded as they are unusual or nonrecurring in nature, providing a more meaningful assessment of ongoing cost performance.CASMex is a key measure used by management and the Air Group Board of Directors to evaluate cost performance. It is also commonly used by industry analysts to compare airlines. In 2026, Air Group revised its CASMex definition to exclude Performance-Based Pay (PBP) expense. We believe this revision provides a more meaningful view of core operating cost performance and enhances comparability with other carriers.Adjusted pretax income is an important metric used in the Company's employee incentive plan, which covers the majority of Air Group employees.Adjusted capital expenditures includes certain amounts that are not classified as investing cash outflows within our consolidated statements of cash flows, but are viewed by management and other stakeholders as significant long-term investments in the business. We believe these adjustments provide a more complete view of our capital expenditures during the year.Liquidity and leverage measures, including debt-to-capitalization and adjusted net debt to EBITDAR, are presented to provide insight into the Company's financial position and flexibility. In 2026, we made adjustments to the calculation of these metrics to enhance comparability with our peers. The debt-to-capitalization ratio now excludes the current portion of operating and finance lease liabilities, with prior periods recast for consistency. Additionally, EBITDAR was adjusted to reflect the fixed portion of operating leases rather than total aircraft rent to better reflect performance, with prior periods recast accordingly.Disclosure of the individual impact of certain items allows investors to evaluate performance both with and without these items. We believe this information is useful because such items may not be indicative of future performance, and industry analysts and investors frequently assess results excluding these items to enhance comparability across periods and among airlines.Although we disclose our unit revenue, we do not, nor are we able to, evaluate unit revenue excluding the impact that changes in fuel costs have had on ticket prices. Fuel expense represents a large percentage of our total operating expenses. Fluctuations in fuel prices often drive changes in unit revenue in the mid-to-long term. Although we believe it is useful to evaluate non-fuel unit costs for the reasons noted above, we would caution readers of these financial statements not to place undue reliance on unit costs excluding fuel as a measure or predictor of future profitability because of the significant impact of fuel costs on our business.GLOSSARY OF TERMSAdjusted debt - long-term debt, plus operating and finance lease liabilitiesAdjusted net debt - long-term debt, plus operating and finance lease liabilities, less unrestricted cash and marketable securitiesAdjusted net debt to EBITDAR - represents adjusted net debt divided by EBITDAR (trailing twelve months earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, fixed portion of operating leases, and special items)ASMs - available seat miles, or "capacity"; represents total seats available across the fleet multiplied by the number of miles flownCASMex - operating costs excluding fuel, freighter costs, Performance-Based Pay (PBP), and special items per ASM, or "unit cost"Debt-to-capitalization ratio - represents adjusted debt, net of current portion, divided by total equity plus adjusted debt, net of current portionDiluted Earnings per Share - represents earnings per share (EPS) using fully diluted shares outstandingDiluted Shares - represents the total number of shares that would be outstanding if all possible sources of conversion, such as stock options, were exercisedFreighter Costs - operating expenses directly attributable to the operation of B737 freighter aircraft and A330-300 freighter aircraft exclusively performing cargo missionsLoad Factor - RPMs as a percentage of ASMs; represents the number of available seats that were filled with revenue passengersPRASM - passenger revenue per ASM, or "passenger unit revenue"RASM - operating revenue per ASMs, or "unit revenue"; operating revenue includes all passenger revenue, freight & mail, loyalty program revenue, and other ancillary revenue; represents the average total revenue for flying one seat one mileRPMs - revenue passenger miles, or "traffic"; represents the number of seats that were filled with revenue passengers; one passenger traveling one mile is one RPMYield - passenger revenue per RPM; represents the average passenger revenue for flying one passenger one mile

UPDATE 6-Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 MAX 9 for checks after blowout

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/1-u-safety-board-investigating-045113315.html

(Changes dateline, adds context in paragraphs 3-4, NTSB statement in paragraph 6)

By David Shepardson, Valerie Insinna and Tim Hepher

Jan 6 (Reuters) - Alaska Airlines has grounded dozens of Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets for safety checks after a cabin panel blowout forced a brand-new airplane loaded with passengers to make an emergency landing.

The piece of fuselage tore off the left side of the jet shortly as it climbed out of Portland, Oregon, en route for Ontario in California on Friday, forcing pilots to turn back and land safely with 171 passengers and six crew on board.

It is the latest mishap involving Boeing's best-selling model, which was grounded for almost two years following crashes in 2018 and 2019, and comes as Boeing and a major supplier are grappling with a succession of production or quality problems.

There were no immediate indications of the cause of the apparent structural failure nor any reports of injuries.

Airline CEO Ben Minicucci said in a statement its fleet of 65 similar planes would be returned to service only after precautionary maintenance and safety inspections, which he expected to be completed in the "next few days".

U.S. aviation authorities announced an investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Saturday a team of experts in structures, operations and systems would arrive on the scene later that day.

Boeing also said it was looking into the incident.

"We are working to gather more information and are in contact with our airline customer," Boeing said.

Flight 1282 had reached just over 16,000 feet when the blowout happened, according to FlightRadar24.

"We'd like to get down," the pilot told air traffic control, according to a recording posted on liveatc.net.

"We are declaring an emergency. We do need to come down to 10,000," the pilot added, referring to the initial staging altitude for such emergencies, below which breathing is considered possible for healthy people without extra oxygen.

Social media posts showed oxygen masks deployed and a portion of the aircraft's side wall missing.

Passenger photos appeared to show that a section of the fuselage sometimes used for an optional rear mid-cabin exit door had been torn away, leaving a door-shaped gap.

The extra door is typically installed by low-cost airlines using extra seats that require more paths for evacuation.

However, those doors are permanently "plugged", or deactivated, on Alaska Airlines jets.

The new MAX 9 was delivered to Alaska Airlines in late October and certified in early November, according to FAA data.

PRODUCTION SNAGS

"Whenever you have a rapid decompression such as this, it's a major safety event," said Anthony Brickhouse, an air safety expert at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

"I can't imagine what these passengers experienced. It would have been loud. The wind would be rushing through that cabin. It was a probably pretty violent situation, and definitely a scary situation."

The incident shows the importance of passengers keeping their seatbelts buckled while seated in an airplane, even if the fasten seatbelt light is off, Brickhouse said, noting that the oxygen mask system appeared to have functioned properly.

Reports said the seat next to the left-hand panel, which contains an ordinary passenger window, was unoccupied.

"This is a very, very serious situation and it could have been a lot worse," he said. "If someone had been sitting in that seat, and they weren't buckled in, it would have been a different situation."

The 737 MAX was grounded for 20 months worldwide after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019 linked to poorly designed cockpit software killed 346 people in Ethiopia and Indonesia. Boeing is awaiting certification of its smaller 737 MAX 7 and larger MAX 10.

China's aviation regulator is conducting an emergency meeting to consider a response to the incident, including a possible new grounding of the Boeing MAX fleet in the country, Bloomberg news reported on Saturday.

China was the first country to ground the MAX in 2019 and only recently started accepting new deliveries, though domestic services using the plane resumed in January last year.

Last week, Boeing said it was urging airlines to inspect all 737 MAX airplanes for a possible loose bolt in the rudder control system.

The FAA said it was closely monitoring Boeing 737 MAX inspections and would consider additional action if more loose or missing hardware was found.

The fuselage for Boeing 737 planes, its most popular model, is made by Kansas-based Spirit AeroSystems, which separated from Boeing in 2005.

In August, Boeing identified a quality problem involving Spirit that resulted in improperly drilled holes on the aft pressure bulkhead.

It was not immediately clear whether the door "plug" used to replace the door when not selected by airlines is also made by the Wichita, Kansas-based, supplier, nor whether the Alaska incident was related to factory processes or design.

Boeing and Spirit did not immediately respond to requests for comments on how that part of the jet is assembled. (Reporting by David Shepardson, Valerie Insinna and Tim Hepher; Additional reporting by Akanksha Khushi; Editing by Gerry Doyle, Jan Harvey and Diane Craft)

Alaska Airlines 737 lands safely after a window blows out 3 miles over Oregon

AUDREY McAVOY
Fri, January 5, 2024 at 8:53 PM MST·

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/alaska-airlines-flight-makes-emergency-035312343.html

An Alaska Airlines jetliner blew out a window and a portion of its fuselage shortly after takeoff three miles above Oregon, creating a gaping hole that sucked clothing off a child and forced the pilots to make an emergency landing as its 174 passengers and six crew members donned oxygen masks.

No one was seriously hurt as the depressurized plane returned safely Friday night to Portland International Airport about 20 minutes after it had departed, but the airline grounded its 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft until they can be inspected. The National Transportation Safety Board said Saturday it will also investigate.

Passenger Evan Smith said a boy and his mother were sitting in the row where the window blew out and the child’s shirt was sucked off him and out of the plane.

“You heard a big loud bang to the left rear. A whooshing sound and all the oxygen masks deployed instantly and everyone got those on,” Smith told KATU-TV.

Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said the inspection of the company 737-9 fleet aircraft could take days to complete. They make up a fifth of the company's 314 planes. It wasn't immediately known Saturday how that would affect the company's flight schedule.

“We are working with Boeing and regulators to understand what occurred ... and will share updates as more information is available,” Minicucci said. “My heart goes out to those who were on this flight – I am so sorry for what you experienced.”

The Port of Portland, which operates the airport, told KPTV that the fire department treated minor injuries at the scene. One person was taken for more treatment, but wasn't seriously hurt.

Flight 1282 had taken off from Portland at 5:07 p.m. Friday for a two-hour flight to Ontario, California. About six minutes later, the window and a chunk of the fuselage blew out as the plane was at about 16,000 feet (4.8 kilometers). One of the pilots declared an emergency and asked for clearance to descend to 10,000 feet (3 kilometers), the altitude where the air would have enough oxygen to breathe safely.

'We need to turn back to Portland," the pilot told controllers in a calm voice that she maintained throughout the landing process.

Videos posted by passengers online showed a gaping hole where the window had been and passengers wearing their masks. They applauded when the plane landed safely about 13 minutes after the window blew out. Firefighters then came down the aisles, asking passengers to remain in their seats as they treated the injured.

The aircraft involved rolled off the assembly line and received its certification just two months ago, according to online FAA records. The plane had been on 145 flights since entering commercial service on Nov. 11, said FlightRadar24, another tracking service. The flight from Portland was the aircraft's third of the day.

The Max is the newest version of Boeing’s venerable 737, a twin-engine, single-aisle plane frequently used on U.S. domestic flights. The plane went into service in May 2017.

Two Max 8 jets crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people and leading to a near two-year worldwide grounding of all Max 8 and Max 9 planes. The planes returned to service only after Boeing made changes to an automated flight control system implicated in the crashes.

Last year, the FAA told pilots to limit use of an anti-ice system on the Max in dry conditions because of concern that inlets around the engines could overheat and break away, possibly striking the plane.

Max deliveries have been interrupted at times to fix manufacturing flaws. The company told airlines in December to inspect the planes for a possible loose bolt in the rudder-control system.

Well guess what, I sold a portion yesterday for a decent profit for the same reason you mentioned. I do get the same feeling in my gut. I will continue to buy and sell a few stocks but don’t have the stomach to go all in. My biggest dilema is to figure how to gradually increase my relatively low exposure to stocks in my retirement’s mutual funds. I had a good plan to do it little by little at set S&P levels, but the sudden spike in the market got me confused. I am nevertheless pleased that I sleep well at night.

I'm not chasing any of these. There is no reason for this or anything else like this to be up. Earnings estimate of -$3.75 on 7/23 and its up 90% from the March low LMAO!
