Bankrupt Big Lots will keep hundreds of stores open under new sale transaction

Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Bankrupt discount retail chain Big Lots says it will be able to keep hundreds of its stores open after executing a strategic sale transaction with a Boston asset management firm.

Columbus, Ohio-based Big Lots announced Friday it has agreed to a sale with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners enabling the transfer of Big Lots assets -- including stores, distribution centers, and intellectual property -- to other retailers and companies, including Variety Wholesalers Inc. of Henderson, N.C

The move, which is subject to the approval of the bankruptcy court, comes just a week after the chain said it planned to close all 900 of its stores and sell off its inventory in the wake of failed sale to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management.

Under the new deal, Variety will acquire between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores, which it plans to continue to operate under the Big Lots brand, and up to two distribution centers. The buyer "may employ" Big Lots employees at the acquired stores and distribution centers, according to Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn.

was in my local big lots store today and never have i seen it stocked this well

Going up from here after consolidation under 10 cents for few days.

Big Lots is a great store!! They have already listed the few and underperforming stores that will close. They are still advertising and promoting the remaining store. Looks like they have confidence in the Future. Hopefully, in the new negotiation, the shareholders will be able to maintain their shares.

I think it should be five cents. Once it reaches five cents, I will consider purchasing 1,000 shares.

It wasn't hard to see this coming. Big Lots has been going down hill for years. High prices, lousy selection and poor service always leads to Chapter 11. Think Sears, Kmart, JC Penny, Bonton ect.

BIG: For years here in San Diego, I would shop at their curious little stores --- few and far between, though, as far as 'convenient' LOCATIONS.

DELAYED EARNINGS so more DUMPING can take place!

BIG: Up by 21% in the Post-M at this writing. (Rumor has it perhaps a BUY-OUT offer looming; since BIG's most recent PR's talked about CHAPTER-11 routines.)
