You have to feel for those people in India right now- hundreds of millions of people without power after the major portions of their power grid goes down. The news said that those affected are more than the population of the US, Canada, & Mexico combined! On the flip side is the potential for ABB to sell its services to the India government. Will never sell my ABB.

ABB’s acquisitive mood leads to big gains

ABB was the biggest riser among European stocks on Thursday as the Swiss-Swedish engineering group confirmed that it was considering acquisitions as it announced fourth-quarter profits that were double last year’s.

The world’s biggest builder of power grids gave a positive outlook for 2010 and said it was looking to make acquisitions, but refused to offer any details.

Its shares added 7.6 per cent to SFr21.28. ABB topped the FTSE Eurofirst 300 which closed 0.7 per cent higher at 1,021.66.

The company, which is a leader in power transmission and energy efficiency solutions, is renowned for its strong cash position with firepower of more than $10bn to make an acquisition.

Analysts said ABB is relatively weak in the low voltage power application market, thus a potential acquisition would most likely be in this area.

There were rumours that Rockwell Automation in the US, which has a market value of $7.6bn, is a potential target. The acquisition of Rockwell would consolidate ABB’s automation expertise while allowing the company to diversify into software where the US company has a stronghold.

ABB profit more than doubles

(2:05 AM ET) PARIS (MarketWatch) -- Engineering group ABBsaid its fourth-quarter profit more than doubled to $540 million, while revenue fell 4% to $8.76 billion. ABB cited lower inventories, efforts to improve customer collections for the profit jump as well as year-earlier provisions for the profit jump. Analysts polled by Capital IQ had forecast a $519 million profit on revenue of $8.6 billion. ABB is upping its dividend by 6% to 0.51 Swiss francs a share. Its cost saving program now aims to sustainably reduce ABB's costs - comprising both cost of sales as well as general and administrative expenses - from 2008 levels by a total of $3 billion by the end of 2010, compared with the previously announced level of $2 billion. Provisions over suspect payments and antitrust allegations may not be enough to cover "adverse outcomes," it added.

brhi is breaking out with abb wow! must be they have contracts together, abb gave brhi 10m $usd last year just to stick around .12 last ,i consider it the abb option contract that does not expire. holding almost 1m brhi, ask me if i am bullish.
