RESTON, Va., Dec. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Iron Mountain
Incorporated ® (NYSE: IRM), the leading global provider of storage
and information management services; QualX Corporation, a
Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business; and TDEC, an SBA
HUBZone-certified small business, today announced that they are
partnering to deliver a large-scale digitization and preservation
project to the U.S. Army War College's U.S. Army Heritage and
Education Center (USAHEC). The contract contains a base year of
performance with four additional one-year option periods and has a
value of up to $30 million.
USAHEC makes available a collection of contemporary and
historical materials related to strategic leadership and the
heritage of the U.S. Army to inform, support research, educate an
international audience, and honor soldiers, past and present. This
collection includes nearly 300 years of manuscripts, photographs,
audio-visual items, artifacts, and other records that are vital to
the preservation of America's armed forces history.
The project includes processing, digitizing, storage and
movement of these artifacts – all done in a secure environment with
procedures that ensure the preservation and protection of this
historically valuable material. The result of this effort will be
the creation of a digital repository, enabling researchers around
the world to have access to this unique archival collection of
military materials, including an estimated 33 million indexed
images.
"QualX delivers tailored solutions to meet enterprise-wide
support requirements, and we have significant past performance with
the Department of Defense," said Alan B.
Moon, chief executive officer, QualX. "The addition
of Iron Mountain to our team brings the world's most successful
records and information management company to this important
digital preservation project. We look forward to delivering to
USAHEC a capability enabling the agency to fulfill its mission of
'telling the Army story…one soldier at a time.'"
As part of this digitization and preservation effort, Iron
Mountain will securely transport this collection from its current
home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to
Iron Mountain's Jessup, Maryland
facility. Iron Mountain and QualX will then digitize the collection
– approximately 24,000 linear feet of unclassified archival
collections, ranging from modern paper records to extremely rare
and delicate documentation – in accordance with USAHEC digitization
standards. TDEC will collect the metadata from this collection and
ensure they have clean optical character recognition (OCR) for all
scanned PDF documents, maintaining quality control for the digital
images.
"The digital preservation of these historical assets is an
important component to maintaining U.S. Army history," said
Michael Lewis, vice president and
general manager of Iron Mountain Government Solutions. "Iron
Mountain's imaging, scanning and indexing services, combined with
our proven secure storage options and chain-of-custody processes
will ensure that USAHEC meets their digital transformation goals
and objectives for this vital and precious collection. We're
especially proud to have QualX as our partner, a veteran-owned
company that brings important analytic and operational support
services to help enhance the overall digitization
project."
