LONDON--Northern Irish broadcaster UTV Media PLC (UTV.LN) on
Monday confirmed it is in talks about selling its television
assets.
UTV, which operates the main commercial terrestrial broadcaster
in Northern Ireland and also has radio stations across Britain and
Ireland, said it "notes the recent media speculation and confirms
that it is in discussions regarding a potential sale of its
television assets."
It said: "Discussions are ongoing and may or may not result in
such a transaction being agreed."
A report in the Belfast Telegraph over the weekend said that UTV
is planning to sell its television division to London-based
broadcaster ITV PLC (ITV.LN).
UTV is the Northern Irish equivalent of ITV, broadcasting a
combination of local shows and ITV programs such as the soap opera
Coronation Street.
It launched a channel in the Republic of Ireland, UTV Ireland,
earlier this year, but has struggled to build audiences. UTV
Ireland's main competitor is TV3, which was bought last month by
U.S. media magnate John Malone's Liberty Global PLC (LBTYA).
