The Bahamian Ministry of Health and Public Hospitals Authority select Allscripts Sunrise™
August 16 2016 - 7:01AM
The Bahamian Ministry of Health and the Public Hospitals Authority
have selected the Allscripts (NASDAQ:MDRX) Sunrise platform for
three hospitals and more than one hundred clinics as they embark on
modernizing the Bahamian health care system. Allscripts Sunrise
will support the Bahamian Public Health Care Network’s core care
venues with a single platform and single patient record – across
inpatient, ambulatory, emergency and revenue cycle venues. The
Bahamian Ministry of Health and Public Hospitals Authority chose
the Allscripts Sunrise suite to help achieve its goal of
positioning the Bahamas as the healthiest country in the Caribbean.
The Bahamas’ goal of providing modern and
accessible healthcare to its population involves upgrading
facilities, extending clinic hours, opening community hospitals on
the Islands of Abaco and Exuma and the implementation of an
electronic health record (EHR). The Health Information Management
System (iHIMS) will help to improve the Bahamian citizen experience
by better utilizing data on managing chronic diseases and improving
the flow of information across the system.
"Bahamian Ministry of Health and the Public
Hospitals Authority chose the Allscripts solution because it will
assist in deploying our national initiative to improve health and
provide a single patient record in the Bahamas. Our national
imperatives include improvements to the public system’s
infrastructure, medical equipment, access to medicine, medical
technology, and the development of an integrated information
system,” said Herbert Brown, Managing Director of Public Hospitals
Authority Bahamas. “Allscripts Sunrise provides the tools we need
to streamline care processes and deliver accurate, up-to-date
health records to all clinicians at the point of care."
Used by many of the leading health systems in the
world, Sunrise is a fully integrated solution that connects
clinical and financial aspects of a health system for inpatient,
emergency and outpatient care.
"The Bahamian Ministry of Health, the Public
Hospitals Authority and Allscripts partnership will empower the
Bahamas to provide one Bahamian citizen record across all venues of
care,” said Steven F. Holmquist, Allscripts Senior Vice President
of New Client Development. “As the Bahamas embarks on a National
Health Insurance program it will require a health information
technology partner with flexible architecture, an Open connectivity
strategy, and solutions that go beyond the four walls of the
hospital and clinics, which makes Allscripts the clear choice."
About The Bahamian Ministry of Health and
the Public Hospitals Authority
The health system of The Bahamas comprises a blend
of publicly and privately provided services. Public sector services
fall under one of two management establishments, the Ministry of
Health and its agencies, and the Public Hospitals Authority and its
agencies.
The community-based primary care health services of
the Ministry of Health are managed by the Department of
Public Health, and are delivered through a network of ten
community health clinics in New Providence and some 108 clinics
scattered throughout the remaining Family Islands.
The Public Hospitals Authority, which is a
quasi-government agency, established in July 1999 by Act of
Parliament, manages the public hospitals in The Bahamas.
There are three public hospitals: Princess
Margaret Hospital in Nassau is the main national acute
care facility with 420 beds, over 31 medical specialties and
subspecialties, and a full span of diagnostic, therapeutic and
rehabilitation therapy services. In 2015, a state-of-the–art
critical care wing was added to the PMH and comprises 20
ultra-modern ICU suites and a NICU with 62 Cot capacity; 7 first
class Operating Theatres with 18 PACU Bays; an Administrative Block
and a modern Medical Laboratory. Sandilands
Rehabilitation Centre is The Bahamas’ national resource
for both Mental Health (including substance abuse treatment) and
Geriatric Services. The Geriatric Hospital cares for the
elderly with medical, social and psychiatric problems; and the
Psychiatric Hospital cares for the mentally and physically
challenged children, adolescent and adult clients. The Centre
also consists of a community-based facility known as The Community
Counselling & Assessment Centre offering Outpatient mental
health services. Rand Memorial Hospital is
an 85-bed facility located in Freeport, on the island of Grand
Bahama. The Rand Memorial Hospital, together with the
Community Health Services in Grand Bahama form the local health
system called Grand Bahama Health Services (GBHS).
The PHA is also responsible for a new supply chain
management agency which consolidates the former Bahamas National
Drug Agency responsible pharmaceutical procurement and
distribution; and the Materials Management Directorate responsible
for procurement, warehousing and distribution of medical/surgical
supplies and other related equipment and materials. The
National Emergency Medical Services also falls under the management
of the Public Hospitals Authority.
