Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) reported a flaring episode Tuesday during a start-up of its Benicia Refinery in northern California.

A statement from the California Emergency Management Agency said the refinery reported a release of more than 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide "caused by a plant startup procedure."

Further details on the start-up weren't provided, but many refineries are in the process of start-ups after maintenance to increase activity in time for the higher-demand late-spring and summer driving season.

The 145,000-barrel-a-day Benicia Refinery is located near San Francisco.
