U.K.'s Competition Authority Rejects SSE, EDF Appeal Over Charges

The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said Monday that it
has dismissed an appeal by SSE Generation Ltd. and EDF Energy
(Thermal Generation) Ltd. against a decision by the industry
regulator Ofgem.
Ofgem rejected a request from SSE last November to change
industry rules such that generators would have received a 120
million-pound ($168.4 million) rebate from National Grid. The
rejection hinged on whether connections between offshore wind farms
and the onshore grid are excluded from an EU cap on transmission
charges.
Ofgem said they were excluded, which means the cap wasn't
breached and no rebate is due.
SSE and EDF appealed to the CMA, which on Monday said there was
an exclusion, and therefore there wasn't a breach of the cap in
2015-16, the period under dispute. It said Ofgem was entitled to
reject the modification request.
