STUTTGART, Germany,
Oct. 14, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ --
On Tuesday, KALEA launched its namesake product, a fully automatic
kitchen composter that turns kitchen waste into real compost in
just 48 hours. The device unites the natural composting process
with patented smart technology and is available on Kickstarter
starting with the early bird price of €399.
Within the home, organic waste gets moldy, creates liquid,
attracts fruit flies, and there's no convenient way to compost food
scraps in a city apartment. Traditional garden composts take months
and require lots of work.
The first-of-its-kind indoor electric kitchen composter can
transform fruits, vegetables, dairy products, cooked food, meat,
coffee grounds, and even small bones into nutrient-rich compost.
It's super compact for even small spaces and it uses an activated
carbon filter to make the process completely odorless (no more bad
smells or fruit flies).
"Organic waste accounts for up to 50% of overall waste volume
worldwide," said KALEA'S Market Director Christian Gartner. "Nature really gave us the
inspiration needed to solve this problem. For the past three years
we've worked hard to unite the natural composting process with
smart technology to turn organic waste into garden-ready
fertilizer."
While other products on the market claim to recycle food scraps
into fertilizer, they just dry and grind up waste without any
biological decomposition taking place. The output is not nutritious
to plants and if it gets wet, can grow mold and actually be
harmful. Other products require a batch to finish before more food
waste can be added. KALEA allows for continuous filling - so smelly
food scraps don't lay around waiting.
KALEA requires just three simple steps: 1) Fill KALEA with food
scraps. It's designed to fully absorb the organic waste volume of a
four-person family. The first chamber shreds and dries everything,
resulting in a volume reduction of around 85%. 2) The shredded,
dried waste is sent to the composting chamber that is full of
sensors and has an intelligent control system. In this chamber, a
perfect combination of temperature, humidity, and aeration wakes up
the natural microorganisms going in organic material and
accelerates their metabolism. This reduces composting time from
several months to 48 hours. 3) Finally, the ready-to-use compost
can be used on indoor and outdoor plants and flowers. KALEA's
compost contains a full spectrum of essential plant nutrients to
enrich plants, and can be stored for up to two years.
KALEA's app lets users monitor and control their KALEA, get tips
on how to use their compost, learn about urban gardening, check
environmental achievements, and connect with the KALEA
community.
When disposed organic waste is dumped into a landfill, it
undergoes anaerobic decomposition and generates methane gas, a
potent greenhouse gas that is about 28 times more harmful than
carbon dioxide at warming the earth on a 100-year timescale, and
over 80 times more powerful over 20 years.
In Germany and other countries
in Central Europe it's common for
organic waste to be separated at home and sent to industrial-scale
composting plants that process organic waste into compost in six to
seven days for horticulture and agriculture. KALEA's tech team
spoke to experts at these plants as well as with composting experts
at Germany's leading research
institute and optimized the process to implement it into a small
kitchen appliance.
"We knew there had to be a better solution to this problem. Our
goal was to create a smart device that created output just as good
as a compost pile, but that was faster, easier to use, hygienic,
and smell free. After many iterations of research and testing we
are so excited to bring our patented technology to kitchens," said
Technology Lead Dr. Johannes Luschitz.
The company is proud to have market leader Kärcher as a
strategic investor.
