Siemens AG (SIE.XE) said Sunday that it will proceed supplying
infrastructure parts for a controversial coal-mine project in
Australia after facing criticism from environmental groups.
"While I do have a lot of empathy for environmental matters, I
do need to balance different interests of different stakeholders,
as long as they have lawful legitimation for what they do," Chief
Executive Joe Kaeser said.
However, the German manufacturer said it will establish a
sustainability committee with external members to address
environmental concerns in the future.
Environmental group Fridays for Future, whose figurehead is
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, called for protests at
Siemens locations in Germany last week, criticizing the company's
involvement in the Carmichael coal-mine project commissioned by
Indian conglomerate Adani Enterprises Ltd. (512599.BY).
