On September 25th Homeowners Are Encouraged
to Schedule a Heating System Tune-Up to Prepare Their Homes for the
Upcoming Cold Weather
HomeServe USA (HomeServe), a leading provider of home repair
solutions, will celebrate National Tune-Up Day on Sept. 25. The day
was established in 2014 to bring attention to the need and benefits
of proper maintenance of home heating systems. National Tune-Up
Day, as featured in the National Day Calendar, is part of
HomeServe’s continued mission to educate and protect homeowners
from the unexpected expenses and potential hazards of emergency
home repairs.
“National Tune-Up Day was created to provide homeowners with a
reminder to get their heating systems tuned up in advance of the
winter season,” said Tom Rusin, CEO of HomeServe USA. “There are
preventative measures homeowners can take themselves and with the
help of a professional technician to assure their home heating
systems are operational before the cold weather arrives.”
To help prevent a repair emergency from occurring during the
height of the heating season, homeowners should consider scheduling
a tune-up before turning their heating system unit on for the
winter. Tune-ups are an inexpensive way to make sure heating
equipment is operating correctly and can help save homeowners money
in the long run, all while ensuring families are prepared when the
first cold snap arrives. Professional tune-ups also provide
homeowners with peace of mind that their heating system is running
efficiently and safely, by identifying any blockages that might
exist in a flue or exhaust vent. If left undetected, a blockage has
the ability to result in potential exposure to carbon monoxide –
posing a serious health risk. HomeServe recommends homeowners tune
up their heating and cooling systems every year in advance of
seasonal changes to avoid any unnecessary risks.
During a heating system tune-up, professional heating
technicians will typically have the following checklist:
- Check safeties and controls
- Check/adjust thermostats
- Check/adjust burners
- Check/clean pilot
- Check/clean gauge and flush low water
cut-off
- Check filters and belts
- Check flue pipe and chimney draft
- Check oil motors and pumps
- Check/clean blower assembly
- Check condensate line if
applicable
Twice a year, HomeServe explores the financial impact of home
repairs and energy use among Americans through its Biannual
State of Home Survey. The Summer 2016 edition, conducted by
Harris Poll on behalf of HomeServe, surveyed over 2,000 adults ages
18 and older and found that nearly a quarter of Americans have no
money set aside in the event of a home repair emergency. In
addition, when homeowners were asked about the likelihood that they
may experience a home repair emergency in the next 12 months, 75
percent of Americans felt it was either not very likely or not
likely at all. Yet, more than half (51 percent) of Americans
reported having actually experienced a home repair emergency in the
past 12 months. The survey also revealed that the most common home
emergency experienced by homeowners is a faulty heating or air
conditioning system. Tune-ups can serve as a line of defense for
homeowners in avoiding a heating system failure or malfunction
during the season.
HomeServe offers home heating protection plans, including plans
that provide tune-ups. HomeServe also offers service plans for
water, sewer, electrical and other home emergencies. All plan
holders have the same access to a Repair Hotline that is accessible
24 hours a day, 365 days a year and a network of employed or local,
licensed and insured technicians available to come to their home
for repairs. More information is available at
