SEOUL, South Korea, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd., a leading global designer, developer and manufacturer of image sensor solutions, mixed-signal and digital multimedia semiconductors, today announced that it successfully applied circuit-under-pad (CUP) technology to its foundry business processes, to further reduce semiconductor chip sizes. MagnaChip applied the technology to its 0.18/0.16 um process and was able to reduce chip size by placing the I/O circuit on the unused area under the pad. The I/O devices send and receive signals, voltage and electric currents on the inside and outside of a semiconductor chip. They are divided into a circuit and a pad. MagnaChip overcame a technological challenge when it succeeded in reducing the I/O size by more than 30%, placing the circuit under the pad. Mr. Channy Lee, EVP and General Manager of MagnaChip's Specialty Manufacturing Service (SMS) business said, "Fabless companies using MagnaChip's foundry service can directly benefit from smaller-size chips, leading to cost reduction in their organizations. We remain focused on leveraging our technology leadership in support of our customers worldwide and plan to extend application of the circuit-under-pad technology to our other processes."
