Frank W DiChiara O.D., F.A.A.O., is a graduate of Salus University
and completed an internship at Rhode Island Hospital, Ophthalmology
Section. He served in the army and was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He became the
director of low-vision clinic at the Rhode Island Association for
the Blind, now called In-Sight. He has written several articles on
low vision and has lectured all over the
United States. He became the twenty-seventh diplomate in low
vision in the United States. He
served in every capacity, including the president of the Rhode
Island Optometric Association. Dr. DiChiara was appointed to the
board of the low-vision section of the American Optometric
Association and served as chairman for four years. He has been
honored by his colleagues with the Optometrist of the Year in 1980
and for his many contributions to the profession, the Distinguished
Service Award in 1987. In 2007, he received the Lifetime
Achievement Award. He was the first doctor to receive this most
prestigious award in over one hundred years.
