SINGAPORE--Citigroup Inc. (C) said it has appointed Brendan Carney as chief executive officer of its Singapore operations.

Mr. Carney will manage the consumer business for Citibank Singapore and lead the consumer franchise in the Asean cluster, which includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, according to a company statement Friday. The appointment is effective Thursday.

The appointment comes as Citi is looking to boost its digital presence globally. Mr. Carney was most recently the consumer business manager for South Korea, where he is credited with turning around the consumer business and growing digital-banking services, Citi said.

Mr. Carney will report to Gonzalo Luchetti, head of consumer banking for Asia-Pacific and EMEA, and Amol Gupte, Asean head and Citi country officer for Singapore.
