Irish Minister: IBM Jobs Plan Is Boost For Ireland

Dow Jones News
International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) plans to create
"several hundred" new jobs at a new global services facility in
west Dublin, the Irish government said Friday, providing a boost
for the troubled Irish economy.
"It is a great vote of confidence in the people of Dublin west
... and in the government's jobs strategy," said Joan Burton, a
senior minister in the coalition government.
The government is depending on exports from a large number of
foreign-owned firms, like IBM, to help pull Ireland out of a deep
banking debt crisis. It is obliged to bring in more austerity
measures to meet the terms of a bailout it struck with the European
Union and International Monetary Fund in late 2010.
IBM is already one of Ireland's largest exporters. It employs
more than 3,000 people in software, support and research facilities
in Cork, Galway and the Irish capital Dublin.
