UbiquiTel Launches EV-DO Service New Technology is up to 10 Times Faster Than Current Wireless Data Speeds CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., July 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UbiquiTel (NASDAQ:UPCS), a PCS Affiliate of Sprint (NYSE:FON), today announced it has launched its new Wireless High-Speed Data (Evolution Data Optimized or EV-DO) service in select business districts and airports throughout the cities of Boise, Idaho and Reno, Nevada, covering approximately 1 million residents. UbiquiTel intends to roll out wireless high-speed data service to approximately half of its coverage area by the end of 2006. The choice of utilizing EV-DO technology will create a seamless high-speed data service that is interoperable with Sprint's national rollout announced last week and is available to all Sprint customers with compatible laptop connection cards. "We're thrilled to be the first wireless operator in Boise and Reno to launch our new wireless high-speed data service and expect to continue to leverage Sprint PCS Vision as an industry leading data product. We have all witnessed how broadband has completely altered the way we use the Internet, and now we'll see it maximize the way we use wireless technology," said Donald A. Harris, chairman and CEO of UbiquiTel. Harris added that business customers can be more productive with access to information anywhere in EV-DO coverage areas. "I think there are so many benefits for customers including sales and customer service and location-based applications, in addition to video and audio streaming, e-mail access and digital imaging," Harris said. To enable wireless high-speed access in EV-DO coverage areas, two EV-DO- ready Sprint PCS Connection Cards are now available: the Sprint PCS Connection Card by Sierra Wireless (AirCard(R) 580) and the Sprint PCS Connection Card by Novatel Wireless(TM) (Merlin S620(TM)). Both cards are capable of delivering typical user download speeds of 400-700 kbps and peak rates of up to 2 Mbps. Where EV-DO is not available, the connection cards will work on existing 1xRTT network with average user speeds of 50 - 70 kbps and peak speeds of up to 144 kbps. EV-DO ready handsets and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are expected to be available by the end of 2005 to further expand the lineup of devices capable of delivering wireless high-speed data services. For business customers, pricing starts at $40 per month for 40MB with a price cap at $90 for those months when customers use the service more. An unlimited access plan is available through business sales channels for $80 per month. All prices exclude taxes and certain surcharges.
