In Memory of its Founder Stanford L. Kurland,
Pennymac Plans to Raise $1 Million for the UCLA Neuro-Oncology
Program to Assist in Finding a Cure for Brain Cancer
Pennymac, a top national mortgage lender with over 4 million
lifetime customers, announced today its sponsorship of the second
annual Stanford L. Kurland Memorial Golf Classic in partnership
with the Sheila and Stanford L. Kurland Family Foundation. This
two-day event is aimed at raising funds for brain cancer research
that is conducted by the UCLA Neuro-Oncology Program.
Stanford L. Kurland founded Pennymac in 2008 with the help of
its executive leadership and strategic partners. Under his
leadership, Pennymac became one of the largest residential mortgage
lenders and servicers across the nation.
“Stan was a tenacious and driven individual who firmly believed
in the power of possibility,” said David Spector, Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of Pennymac. “His remarkable life and
accomplishments continue to inspire us all, and we are privileged
to be able to continue his legacy by supporting a cause that aligns
with the work he started with UCLA.”
The event will kick-off with a welcome reception at the Four
Seasons in Westlake Village, California on Sunday, July 23,
followed by an action-packed day of golf on Monday, July 24 at the
nearby Sherwood Country Club. This year’s fundraising target is $1
million, which will benefit the UCLA Neuro-Oncology Program in
honor of Pennymac’s founder Stanford L. Kurland, who was diagnosed
with an inoperable brain tumor in 2020 and received exceptional
treatment and care at UCLA’s Neuro-Oncology facilities.
Sheila Kurland, co-founder of the Sheila and Stanford L. Kurland
Family Foundation takes comfort in knowing her husband’s legacy
will help save lives thanks to UCLA and its doctors.
“Stan felt certain that in supporting UCLA, Dr. Tim Cloughesy
and Dr. David Nathanson’s research, a cure for brain cancer is on
the horizon,” said Sheila Kurland.
An estimated 700,000 people in the United States currently live
with a primary brain tumor, and approximately 90,000 new diagnoses
are expected this year alone. Last year’s event raised critical
funds to help UCLA continue to make significant progress in brain
cancer research. UCLA recently developed a promising new treatment
called ERAS-801, a small molecule that targets a rogue gene found
in about 60% of individuals with the aggressive form of brain
cancer. Additionally, the team is conducting preclinical studies of
other drugs that may benefit the remaining 40% of brain cancer
patients.
“We are so grateful for the incredible philanthropic support
from Pennymac and the Kurland Family to help us discover
revolutionary brain cancer therapies,” said Dr. Timothy Cloughesy,
Co-Director of the UCLA Brain Tumor Center. “It is the costliest
form of cancer and the Stanford L. Kurland Memorial Golf Classic
provides crucial funding to propel our preclinical and clinical
research forward.”
