eMagin Corporation (AMEX: EMA), a leader in OLED technology, and
the U.S. Army will work together to develop a testing methodology
to measure the useful life of active matrix OLED (organic
light-emitting diode) displays. eMagin will work specifically with
the Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) of the
U.S. Army's Research, Development, and Engineering Command's
(RDECOM's) Communications-Electronics Research, Development and
Engineering Center (CRDEC). Under the terms of this Cooperative
Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), eMagin and NVESD will
develop better ways to assess the applicability of active matrix
OLED displays in military systems on the basis of their usable
lifetimes. Current methodologies for measuring lifetime of
non-emissive displays, such as LCDs, do not apply to emissive
displays like OLED devices. Rather, the display's lifetime depends
on the specific application and can be much longer than most
conventional models predict. For an OLED-based device, such factors
as device color (including filters), video content, and temperature
and luminance ranges all affect usable lifetime. NVESD and eMagin
co-developed an initial usable lifetime model for a joint paper
presented at SPIE Defense and Security Conference in March 2005.
This project will extend and refine that initial work. OLED
microdisplays are of particular interest for near-eye applications
for military and commercial systems owing to their industry-leading
power efficiency and ruggedness. eMagin recently announced new
OLED-XL (tm) technology that will extend this leadership in power
efficiency and provide higher brightness with longer lifetime.
"This project lays the groundwork for performance and measurement
standards so that the Government can make more informed decisions
about the utility of OLED technologies," said Susan Jones,
executive vice president, eMagin Corporation. "Working to meet
these standards will enable us to develop our OLED capabilities in
ways that will prove most useful to our customers." About eMagin
Corporation A leader in personal display systems and OLED
microdisplay technologies, eMagin integrates high-resolution OLED
microdisplays, magnifying optics, and systems technologies to
create a virtual image that appears comparable to that of a
computer monitor or a large-screen television. eMagin's OLED
displays have broad market reach and are incorporated into a
variety of near-to-eye imaging products by military, industrial,
medical and consumer manufacturers, who choose eMagin's
award-winning technology as a core component for their solutions.
eMagin's Z800 3DVisor provides superb 3D stereovision and
headtracking for PC gaming, training and simulation, and other
applications. It won the CEA's Innovation of Year award in the
digital display category and won additional recognition in the
electronic gaming category. eMagin's microdisplay manufacturing and
R&D operations are co-located with IBM on its campus in East
Fishkill, New York. System design facilities and sales and
marketing are located in Bellevue, Washington. A sales office is
located in Tokyo, Japan. For additional information, please visit
