Open Source Platform Moves beyond Mobile Devices SUNNYVALE, Calif.
and TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MIPS
Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPS), a leading provider of
industry-standard processor architectures and cores for home
entertainment, communications, networking and portable multimedia
markets, today announced that MIPS(R) licensees are scheduled to
exhibit the revolutionary Android(TM) platform running on its
architecture at COMPUTEX TAIPEI this week. The demonstrations by
RMI Corporation and Sigma Designs are a clear indication that
Android is moving beyond mobile handsets into other digital
consumer devices. Separately today, MIPS Technologies announced
availability of the Android platform on its industry-standard MIPS
architecture. In its suite at the conference, RMI Corporation, a
leading provider of high-performance processors for communications
and media, will feature a Home Media Player(TM) (HMP) running
Android. Attendees can see the power of Android in several
applications, including full internet browsing capability.
According to Mike Wodopian, vice president and general manager,
RMI, "The MIPS architecture is extremely extensive and gives us the
flexibility to meet the needs of our low-power Alchemy processor
family and our new superscalar XLP(TM) Processor with frequencies
greater than 2 GHz. This focus on the Android platform gives us
closer alignment with our Alchemy-based application solutions,
enabling us to bring the most advanced processing solutions with
internet connectivity and content to numerous devices such as HMPs,
MIDs, audio/video navigation devices and other portable media
players." MIPS licensee Sigma Designs will demonstrate its recently
announced SM8642 evaluation board running Android. The SM8642 SoC
is designed for cost-optimized Blu-ray players and is based on the
MIPS32(R) 74K(TM) core. Sigma's port includes the complete Android
stack, including Linux-based operating system kernel, Dalvik
virtual machine, integrated Web kit browser, and key applications.
"MIPS cores are at the heart of many of our products, including our
new SM8642 and SM8652 processors -- announced separately at
COMPUTEX this week," said Ken Lowe, vice president of strategic
marketing, Sigma Designs. "We are pleased that MIPS is pushing
forward to bring Android to digital home applications. Android
enables an extended range of internet-savvy applications for Sigma
Designs' target markets, including Blu-ray players, set-top boxes,
and digital televisions, bringing additional functionality to these
connected devices. Android provides a stable platform for always-on
consumer products that allows for fast and easy application
development built on reusable components." "As MIPS Technologies
officially kicks off our Android initiative this week at COMPUTEX,
we are pleased that MIPS licensees Sigma Designs and RMI are
already demonstrating their solutions," said Art Swift, vice
president of marketing, MIPS Technologies. "RMI and Sigma are just
two of the many visionary MIPS licensees who are considering
Android for future products. Because of our leadership in the
digital home and beyond, MIPS is well positioned to drive Android
into these new markets. Together with our licensees and ecosystem
partners, we are enabling developers to work on next-generation
consumer devices leveraging the Android platform." For more
