The second annual Diamond 45/UbiquiTel Scholarship program will help young leaders pay for college GLENSIDE, Pa., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The late Phillies relief pitcher, Tug McGraw, would no doubt believe that a new scholarship program aimed at young collegiate leaders is the ultimate save. Beginning today, the Tug McGraw Foundation has officially kicked off the Second Diamond 45/UbiquiTel Scholarship Program. A grant from Conshohocken, Pennsylvania- based UbiquiTel Inc. (NASDAQ:UPCS), a PCS affiliate of Sprint, has enabled the Foundation to offer college scholarships to eligible junior and senior collegiate students attending an accredited four-year college or university in the United States. Students in colleges across America today are the leaders of tomorrow. The Foundation created the Diamond 45 Scholarship Program to provide monetary support for those best able to carry on Tug's positive and motivating "Ya Gotta Believe" message. The scholarship recipients, who will be chosen through a competitive application process, will need to demonstrate academic excellence and community and charitable involvement. "Tug believed in the power of youth and he spent countless hours with young people on charitable projects," said Laurie Hawkins, president of the Tug McGraw Foundation. "He would have been proud of our 2005 awardees. Each of the young men and women had special qualities that demonstrated a commitment to community and strong leadership potential. They will surely carry on the legacy of Tug's motivating actions and leadership." The special grant from UbiquiTel will enable the Foundation to award 35 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. Applicants must meet the criteria established by the Foundation. Applications will be judged by the Foundation's Scholarship Review Committee, comprised of individuals with experience as professional athletes and business executives, and in academia. Scholarships will be awarded for the Winter 2006 term. "What a thrill it was to present last year's Diamond 45 scholarships," said Donald A. Harris, Chairman and CEO of UbiquiTel. "The young people we met truly reflected Tug's spirit and 'can-do' attitude, and we are happy to be part of the scholarship program again this year. Our chief operating officer, Dean Russell, and I are West Point graduates and have always been involved in sports. We want to help other young people succeed in college and embrace the values and positive attitude that were the hallmark of Tug's life and life's work." Applications became available on October 24, 2005 and may be obtained from the Foundation by calling (215) 885-5355, emailing a request to or sending a request by regular mail to: the Tug McGraw Foundation, 217 Parkside Lane, Glenside, PA 19038.
