Infrastructure Improvements and Safeguard Water Quality
New York American Water’s newly-constructed Portable
Iron-Removal Treatment Plant Number Two, located on Chautauqua
Avenue in Lakeview, NY is fully-operational. The new plant, which
provides 2 million gallons of water daily to more than 3,000 homes
in the Lakeview area, is equipped with iron-removal treatment to
combat discolored water. The iron-filtration system uses a sand and
anthracite media to trap iron molecules as they pass through filter
vessels.
“The more we pump the water on Long Island, the more we see
greater concentrations of naturally-occurring iron in the water
supply,” said New York American Water President Brian Bruce. “The
amount of iron in the water throughout the Lakeview service area is
below regulatory limits, making the water supply safe to drink and
use. However, additional iron content can cause water
discoloration, which is what this filtration system will
address.”
Water discoloration can also occur when water is in high demand
and moving through pipes at a faster pace, stirring up excess iron
sediment that has settled in the pipes. A similar situation can
occur within older residential and commercial hot water heaters and
systems.
The treatment plant represents a company investment of about
$1.4 million. This mobile option is the second of its kind in
Nassau County, NY. Only taking three – six months to develop, the
plant enabled New York American Water to quickly begin to address
the high concentration of iron from Long Island’s underground water
supply in less than a year.
