Mercedes-Benz Group AG said Wednesday that battery-electric vehicle sales rose in the first quarter on surging demand in the U.S. and to a lesser extent in Europe.

The German luxury-car maker said it sold 51,600 BEVs, or fully-electric vehicles, an 89% jump in the segment compared with the first quarter of last year. Overall car sales grew 3% to 503,500 units in the first quarter.

BEVs accounted for 10% of Mercedes-Benz's total first-quarter sales, the company said, after accounting for 6% in the same period last year.

The company's BEV sales in the U.S. more than quadrupled despite stable overall sales, it said. In Europe, Mercedes-Benz experienced a 41% BEV sales increase.

Mercedes-Benz's update comes a day after BMW AG reported a rise in first-quarter BEV sales as well, up 83% compared with last year.
