About the Federally Recognized Tribes of Northwest Alaska
The Native Villages
of Ambler, Buckland, Deering, Kiana, Kivalina, Kobuk, Kotzebue, Noatak, Noorvik, Pt. Hope, Selawik, and Shungnak comprise the 12 federally recognized
tribes of Northwest Alaska. Each tribe is governed by a
7-member tribal council elected by members. The tribal councils
oversee tribal operations such as village stores; listen and
respond to the needs of tribal members; and represent the tribe
with regional, state and federal entities. Tribal council members
typically serve their communities without pay on a completely
voluntary basis.
