Highschool Students Win
Barclays Hackathon
A team of students from Bedford
School in the U.K. took third place in a competition focused on
blockchain interoperability. The Hackathon was hosted by
Clearmatics, through the fintech hub in London - Barclays Rise.
Clearmatics was the original developer of the Utility Settlement
Coin banking consortium. The competition was based on a challenge
created by Clearmatics to use their Ion interoperability protocol
to smoothly exchange data between two blockchains - such as widely
used networks like Hyperledger Fabric and the Ethereum public
network. The competition included teams of developers from
companies such as Santander, Barclays, Web3j and Adhara. The team
of students that took 3rd place in the competition apparently had
no previous knowledge of blockchain technology.

transport card SUBE (Sistema Único de Boleto Electrónico) will now
accept payments in Bitcoin. The process for purchasing rides
through the card is via the platform Alto Viaje. The company
partnered with Bitex to provide blockchain-driven financial
services to their business. Users can access the Bitcoin payment
portal through Alto Viaje’s website. The SUBE system is used by
over seven million people in 37 locations in Argentina. Previously
they experimented payment systems with PayPal and Rapipago. The
country hopes that more access to Bitcoin payments could increase
the number of tourists that visit the country each year.
Blockchain On Deck For 7th
World Government Summit
Over the past decade, the UAE has
emerged as one of the more blockchain technology friendly
countries. For this year’s World Government Summit, representatives
from the country will discuss the development of blockchain and
digital assets in their country’s economy. There will be two closed
sessions devoted to global financial trends. Topics included will
be the development of blockchain and digital currencies and
building a feasible economic environment around the two
technologies. Participants will of the conference will also discuss
the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and the
governance of digital assets as well. Perhaps most importantly,
there will be an open session with the International Monetary Fund
(IMF) to debate what impact the technology could have on
