Chicago Tribune Columnist Dahleen Glanton Wins 2018 American Society of News Editors Mike Royko Award
March 29 2018 - 10:15AM
The Chicago Tribune is pleased to announce that columnist Dahleen
Glanton has been recognized as the recipient of the 2018 American
Society of News Editors Mike Royko Award for Commentary/Column
Writing. One of the most significant awards in U.S. journalism, the
ASNE Mike Royko Award recognizes “excellence in writing by an
individual that expresses a personal point of view.”
Said the ASNE judges, "Dahleen Glanton writes with thunderous
passion and uncommon clarity about the issue that affects Chicago
worst and most: violence, too often by and against the young,
spawned by the hopelessness of the city’s high-poverty
neighborhoods. Her empathy for the underdog and her ability to put
voice to unpleasant truths are infused in every sentence she
writes."
Glanton was a finalist in 2017 for the Pulitzer Prize in
commentary. A graduate of the University of Georgia, she joined the
Tribune in 1989 after working for the Los Angeles Times.
“Dahleen writes with heart and fearlessness, and it’s wonderful
to see her earn one of the highest honors in journalism,” said
Tribune Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Bruce Dold. “It’s
particularly exciting to see her win an award that honors a Chicago
legend, Mike Royko.”
The Chicago Tribune has sponsored the award since 2013 in memory
of Royko, who died in 1997. Royko wrote columns for nearly 34 years
at the Chicago Daily News, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago
Tribune.
Yvonne Abraham of The Boston Globe and Petula Dvorak of The
Washington Post were finalists for the commentary award.
The Tribune’s Patricia Callahan was a finalist for the ASNE
Frank A. Blethen Award for Local Accountability Reporting for her
series “Doomed by Delay”, examining how Illinois bureaucracy robbed
parents of a chance to save their children from a deadly
disease.
Carolyn Lumsden, opinion editor for the Hartford Courant, which
is also owned by the Tribune’s parent company tronc, Inc., was a
finalist for the Burl Osborne Award for Editorial Leadership.
The Chicago Tribune recently received 11 first place awards,
including top honors in public service and best website, from the
2017 Illinois Associated Press Media Editors newspaper contest.
