Mosaic Co., one of the world's largest fertilizer makers, said Chief Executive Jim Prokopanko will step down in August to spend more time with his family in the wake of his treatment for cancer.

The company said Wednesday that James C. O'Rourke, currently the chief operating officer, will assume Mr. Prokopanko's titles, which also include president of the company, on Aug. 5. Mr. Prokopanko will then serve as an adviser until fully retiring in early January next year, Mosaic said.

Last year, the Plymouth, Minn., company said Mr. Prokopanko had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy treatment. He then took a leave of absence for a surgical procedure. "I deeply appreciate the outpouring of support I received during my illness last year, and I am happy to be healthy today. I plan to enjoy my good health with my family," Mr. Prokopanko said in a statement.

Mr. Prokopanko joined Mosaic in 2006 and became chief executive the following year. He previously had worked at Cargill Inc.
