Merck & Co. Monday unveiled accelerated goals in its efforts
to combat climate change, including plans to reach its target of
100% renewable energy use 15 years ahead of schedule.
The Kenilworth, N.J., drugmaker said it now aims to achieve
carbon neutrality across its operations by 2025, along with a 30%
reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions among its suppliers by
2030.
Merck said it plans to achieve carbon neutrality in its
operations by continuing to increase efficiency and reduce carbon
emissions, applying sustainable building standards, and continuing
its move away from the use of fossil fuel. The company said it also
plans to offset emissions with a portfolio of carbon credits,
including carbon removals.
Merck, which had previously pledged to use 100% renewable energy
for its purchased electricity by 2040, said it has signed three new
virtual power purchase agreements for utility-scale energy projects
based in Texas and Spain that will add roughly 145 megawatts of
solar and wind energy to the grid.
