Vinci SA has officially started work on the Sambangalou hydroelectric dam in south-east Senegal, the French construction giant said on Monday.

The overall cost of the dam is estimated at 388 million euros ($416.5 million) and 1,200 jobs will be created at the peak of construction work.

With a capacity of 4 billion cubic meters and an installed capacity of 128 megawatts of electricity, the dam will have a reservoir 108 meters high. The project will produce renewable energy and irrigate 90,000 hectares of farmlands in southern Senegal and contribute to the supply of drinking water to surrounding communities.

Construction of the dams will last nearly four years and its operations have been rendered environmentally friendly, Vinci said.
