--The Bureau of Land Management renewed two mineral leases near
a popular wilderness area in Minnesota, saying it strengthens
national security by increasing domestic production of "critical
minerals," Reuters reports Wednesday.
--The leases, which are close to the Boundary Waters Wilderness
area, were given to Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, which is a
subsidiary of Chilean miner Antofagasta, the report said.
--"Mining strategic metals in the United States is beneficial to
national security, national and local economies, and job creation,"
Interior Dept. assistant secretary Joe Balash said, according to
the report.
