The German government will discuss at a meeting at 1400 GMT Friday whether or not the planned summit on General Motor Corp.'s (GM) Opel unit will proceed later that day.

The government and governors of the German states with Opel plants will meet to discuss how they intend to proceed, a German government official who declined to be identified told Dow Jones Newswires.

The meeting will take place without representatives of GM, the U.S. government and the two remaining suitors for Opel, Fiat Spa (F.MI) and Austro-Canadian auto supplier Magna International Inc. (MGA), the person said.
