City of Miami Selects Cardiac Science as Exclusive Provider of AEDs for Public Access Defibrillation Program Miami Joins San Diego and Minneapolis as Third Major U.S. City to Partner With Cardiac Science IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cardiac Science, Inc. (NASDAQ:DFIB), a leading manufacturer of life-saving automatic public-access defibrillators (AEDs) announced today that it is has been selected as the exclusive provider of AEDs and comprehensive AED/CPR training and AED program management services for the city of Miami and the Miami "Team For Life" Project. Miami's Team for Life project is a Public Access Defibrillation Program (PAD) which has been approved by the Miami City Commission and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz that includes an exclusive public-private partnership agreement between the city of Miami and Cardiac Science. The PAD program is being coordinated by the Miami Department of Fire-Rescue which, in addition to planning the deployment of AEDs, is reaching out to private citizens through a public awareness campaign on the importance of defibrillation therapy and the use of AEDs to treat victims of a massive heart attack, also called sudden cardiac arrest. The goal of the project is to save lives of local citizens by making AEDs more accessible in a wide variety of settings throughout the City of Miami. In addition, the program aims to educate the citizens about the Chain of Survival, an emergency intervention process that includes early defibrillation and CPR. Miami's Fire-Rescue Department began the citywide effort last fall with the purchase of 42 of Cardiac Science's Powerheart(R)-brand AEDs for deployment at buildings and parks throughout the city. Among the other areas targeted for AEDs in the future are police facilities and squad cars, city department offices and public locations where people congregate. Private businesses throughout Miami will also be given the opportunity to purchase AEDs and training via the program. "The goal of our PAD program is making AEDs easily accessible in our community and at the same time educating our city employees and our citizens on important AED/CPR skills. We believe this is an important investment that will save lives in our metropolitan area," said William Bryson, Fire Chief, Miami Fire-Rescue, which is the key partner in the AED deployment process. "This is a true public-private partnership and we welcome the help of Cardiac Science in this comprehensive effort. We chose Cardiac Science based on an extensive review of all the potential providers in the market and found that Cardiac Science has both reliable and easy to use AEDs." Cardiac Science Chairman and CEO Raymond W. Cohen said major cities around the nation have found that PAD programs enjoin local government and its citizens in an important community partnership for a worthy cause -- saving lives. Being selected by the city of Miami as a sole source provider of AEDs and AED/CPR training services is also another big milestone for Cardiac Science, Cohen added. "Miami has joined the growing number of leading cities in the nation -- including Boston, San Diego, Minneapolis, Fort Worth and others -- in embarking on what has become an essential part of any emergency medical preparation and response effort -- a Public Access Defibrillation program," said Cardiac Science Chairman and CEO Raymond W. Cohen. "Being selected by the city of Miami underscores the value of our AED products and program management services." About Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and AEDs Currently more than 90 percent of SCA victims die before reaching the hospital due to the length of time it takes for emergency personnel to arrive on the scene. In all, about 340,000 Americans die each year from SCA. In fact, a person's chance of survival is reduced by about 10 percent for every minute spent waiting for a potentially life-saving defibrillation shock. Implementation of a successful public access defibrillation program has achieved survival rates as high as 74 percent if patients received defibrillation within 3 minutes. The American Heart Association estimates that as many as 50,000 of these lives can be saved if an automated external defibrillator is available at the time of the emergency, and someone is nearby who has been trained to use it. AEDs are becoming more widely available and are being used in a variety of settings, including airplanes and airports, government workplaces, office buildings, industrial plants, schools, universities, casinos, golf courses, sports arenas, homes and health clubs. About Cardiac Science Cardiac Science develops, manufactures and markets Powerheart(R)-brand public-access defibrillators (AEDs) and offers comprehensive AED/CPR training and AED program management services that facilitate successful deployments. The Company also makes its AEDs on a private label basis for other leading medical companies such as Nihon Kohden (Japan) Quinton Cardiology Systems and GE Healthcare.
