Shanghai Jiao Tong University Licenses MIPS(R) Processor for Its
DTV Product Development University to Develop Commercial SoC based
on MIPS32(R) 4Kc(R) SMIC .18 Hard Core MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and
SHANGHAI, China, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MIPS
Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ:MIPS), a leading provider of
industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital
consumer and business applications, and Shanghai Jiao Tong
University, one of China's most distinguished and respected
educational institutions, today announced that SJTU's IC and System
Research Center has licensed the MIPS32(R) 4Kc(R) SMIC .18 hard
core to develop SoCs for China's rapidly expanding digital
television (DTV) market. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of
the key universities developing technology standards for adoption
in the DTV market in China. The University is working closely with
MIPS Technologies in the design and development of the chip based
on the MIPS32 4Kc hard core, utilizing leading edge tools,
simulation software and documentation provided by MIPS
Technologies. The resulting device will combine multiple MIPS cores
and implement audio and video decoding algorithms. "MIPS
Technologies' acknowledged leadership in the DTV space, and now its
presence here in Shanghai, made this the right technology decision
for us," said Shibao Zheng, Vice Director of the IC and System
Research Center, SJTU. "We're looking forward to developing SoCs in
China that adhere to the standards, performance levels and price
points of this fast growing market." "We're delighted to
collaborate with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the development
of next generation SoCs that will help drive China's DTV market
forward," said Jack Browne, MIPS Technologies' VP of Worldwide
Sales. "Our proven architecture, together with a robust DTV
software infrastructure that includes Java, audio and video
decoding will help SJTU implement new localized standards and
deliver a superior chip that will allow manufacturers to compete
and win in the digital TV market." About the MIPS32 4Kc SMIC .18
Hard Core The MIPS32 4Kc SMIC .18 micron hard core gives designers
more performance and greater flexibility to achieve higher system
throughput while controlling silicon cost. The flexibility and
re-programmability enables upgrades in software as protocol
specifications or market requirements evolve. With a worst case
frequency of 190MHz and a die area of 3.42 square millimeters, the
4Kc SMIC .18 hard core offers a tremendous price-performance
advantage to SoC designers. About MIPS Technologies MIPS
