BRUSSELS--Ukraine's state oil and gas company OAO Naftogaz said
Wednesday it had suspended natural gas purchases from Russian gas
giant OAO Gazprom because of the failure to agree a longer-term gas
supply accord.
Naftogaz said it would continue to allow delivery of gas to
Gazprom clients in the European Union and Turkey.
It said it was ready to renew gas purchases from Gazprom once "a
comprehensive temporary agreement" is reached that should last
until at least the end of next March.
The European Commission, which mediates the negotiations between
Gazprom and Naftogaz, issued a statement Tuesday evening saying the
two sides were "still far apart" on a deal.
