The company has been informed that Mr T J Bowdler, Chief Executive, exercised
options over 12,135 Ordinary shares of 10p each in the Company under the
Restricted Share Scheme for Tim Bowdler on 27 May 2003 at a total cost of #1.


As a result of the exercise Mr S R Paterson, Finance Director, a potential
beneficiary under the Johnston Press plc Employee Share Trust ceases to have an
interest in the 12,135 Ordinary shares. The total number of shares in which Mr
Paterson is now interested is 223,482 Ordinary shares.
