Business Wire
Ballistic Recovery Systems, the worlds leading manufacturer of
whole-aircraft parachute systems, has announced the following staff
appointments to several parachute-industry committees and updates
on certification attainments. Frank Hoffmann, VP of Engineering,
was appointed chairman of the ASTM F.37 task group for whole
aircraft parachute recovery systems on light sport aircraft (LSA).
In this position, Mr. Hoffmann will guide the task group members to
improvements and updates of relevant standards to reflect ongoing
changes in technology. Chosen by a committee of his peers, Mr.
Hoffmanns appointment to this key position allows him to influence
future design standards for this product line. This follows the May
2007 appointment of Mr. Hoffmann to the American Institute of
Aeronautics (AIAA) Aerodynamic Decelerator Technical Committee
(www.aerodecelerator.org), which meets several times a year
throughout the US. This committee focuses on development and
application of aerodynamic deceleration systems and lifting
parachutes, pararotators, and inflatable decelerators for
aerodynamic deceleration, sustentation, and landing of manned and
unmanned vehicles. Every second year, the AIAA ADS TC hosts the
Aerodynamic Decelerator System Conference, as well as the Heinrich
Parachute Short Course. We are also pleased to announce that BRS
parachute rigger John Koch has received FAA certification as a
Parachute Master Rigger. This certification is the highest level
awarded to a rigger and authorizes John to complete all major
repairs that affect the airworthiness or function of a parachute.
John, an FAA certified Senior Rigger for the past six years, has
over 2,400 parachute jumps, and is also a private pilot and A&P
mechanic. Finally, at the Parachute Industry Association (PIA) Mini
Symposium held in Barcelona, Spain in February 2008, BRS
Fabrication general manager Norman Girdwood was re-elected as Chair
of the PIA Risk Management Sub-Committee. This sub-committee meets
three times a year and is currently tasked with reviewing the
existing risk management measuresin use in the industry, the
emphasis being on sport parachuting and sport parachute equipment
manufacturers. PIA supports all aspects of parachute industry
design, specifications, and manufacturing of commercial and
government parachute products. Mr. Girdwoods involvement with this
key committee allows BRS to have visibility to and influence of the
latest industry innovations and risk parameters. About Ballistic
