Joint IP Multimedia Services Architecture to be Presented at IEC

Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Caspian, the leading supplier of advanced
policy-based traffic management solutions for IP networks, and
Verilink (NASDAQ:VRLK), a leading provider of broadband access
solutions, today announced that they have partnered to develop a
new approach for deploying converged IP multimedia services. The
joint Multimedia Service Assurance Architecture (MSAA) will combine
technology solutions from both companies, and will enable service
providers to deploy next-generation multimedia IP services on
access networks with guaranteed end-to-end quality of service
(QoS). With the new architecture, Caspian and Verilink aim to help
service providers manage service level agreements (SLAs), create
new revenue opportunities for tiered services, and improve
quality-of-experience (QoE) for service subscribers. Key elements
of the MSAA will include new multimedia access gateways from
Verilink, which are deployed at customer sites, and Caspian
flow-based media controllers deployed at network peering or
aggregation points. "The ability to manage SLAs and guarantee QoS
to premium service customers is a powerful resource for service
providers and is directly linked to service profitability," said
Ulrik Seiersen, president of IPPC Denmark, a Scandinavian service
provider. "Caspian currently represents a key foundational element
of our network strategy and multimedia service offerings. We look
forward to expanding premium services for our customers as this
joint architecture evolves." The companies' joint architecture will
enable service providers to establish and enforce policies for fair
use of their network resources. With the ability to control
peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic and effectively allocate bandwidth for
premium multimedia IP services, service providers will be able to
guarantee true end-to-end QoS and high QoE for broadband
subscribers of gaming, voice over IP (VoIP), video on demand (VoD),
and future IP services. With this solution, new revenue services
such as gaming and VoD can be added to a service provider's network
by deploying Caspian media controllers in combination with
Verilink's multimedia customer premise gateways. The new
architecture will be easily deployable on new and existing
networks, allowing subscribers and service providers to quickly
benefit. "Service providers have faced the dilemma of how to ensure
high quality for next-generation IP services without costly
bandwidth over-provisioning or the deployment of numerous traffic
management appliances throughout their networks," said Junaid
Islam, vice president for technology strategy and marketing for
Caspian. "The Multimedia Service Assurance Architecture represents
the industry's first traffic management solution that gives service
providers control over individual traffic flows. With policy-based
bandwidth, service providers will be able to easily prioritize
premium traffic over basic services and prevent peer-to-peer
download traffic from negatively affecting service quality."
"Converging IP services over a network brings QoS and bandwidth
issues to the forefront of service providers' decision-making
processes," said Sab Gosal, vice president of marketing at
Verilink. "Of prime concern is how to ensure QoS through a
multitude of connections, where bandwidth is necessarily limited.
The Verilink and Caspian alliance provides an end-to-end technology
solution that dramatically improves users' quality of experience
and accelerates service providers' abilities to guarantee
profitable, fair use of network resources." The architecture will
be presented in a panel discussion on Friday, November 11 at the
International Engineering Consortium Executive ComForum 2005, at
The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. The session, "Using QoS to
Create New Revenue in an IP Multimedia World," is scheduled for
10:00 a.m. EST. New solutions resulting from the architecture are
being evaluated with customers through the end of 2005 and are
expected to become available for deployment in the first quarter,
2006. About Caspian Caspian is the first to deliver advanced
