HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo., April 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international design, consulting, engineering and management services company, has received top awards, the Grand and Honor awards, from two of the engineering industry's most recognized associations in the U.S., the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) for innovative design projects.

The Grand Award in ACEC's Waste & Storm Water Category and in AAEE's Industrial Waste Practice category went to Malcolm Pirnie, the Water Division of ARCADIS, for co-digestion and combined heat and power improvements at the Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Pirnie/ARCADIS project team designed the nation's first zero net energy wastewater treatment plant, capable of producing 100 percent of its own power using renewable digester gas.

"Receiving top awards from industry organizations such as ACEC and AAEE is truly a great honor," said Steve Blake, chief executive officer for ARCADIS U.S. "Our design team took a complex challenge and applied an innovative solution to use whey waste from a nearby yogurt plant to generate enough energy to fully power the plant, balancing the needs of a community with stewardship for our environment."

Bioengineering ARCADIS LLC, a small business venture established as a U.S. Small Business Association mentor-protege entity, was recognized with Honor Awards from the ACEC and AAEE for its work on the New Orleans Gulf Intracoastal Waterway West Closure Complex Pump Station, the world's largest stormwater pump station and a critical element in a federally mandated Hurricane Storm Damage Risk Reduction System for New Orleans. The joint venture participated in the design team management for major project components including flood walls, levees, a navigable gate, and provided the engineering design of the unique and massive $350 million pump station.

"Working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and contractor using the ECI process, we were able to complete the project in record time," said Dennis Kamber, senior vice president for ARCADIS U.S. "We believe the work done in New Orleans will be viewed as a global example of water management engineering at its best."

In addition, ARCADIS won a second AAEE Honor Award in the category of operations/management for the Columbus Professional Program Management project. The ARCADIS team served as professional program manager to the city of Columbus to successfully meet the Ohio EPA's deadline and the city's goal of protecting its rivers from sewer overflows and establish Columbus as a leading community in which to live, work and raise a family.

"The city's ability to prosper in the coming decades is directly connected to our ability to ensure clean and safe waterways for future generations," according to Andrew Ginther, public utilities chair for Columbus.
