SilverSneakers, the nation’s leading exercise and social support
program for older adults, is available to more than 12 million
Medicare beneficiaries. Since 2004, the program has been offered to
Humana Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement members, a total
of more than three million Humana Medicare members nationwide.
“Since 2004, when Humana first partnered with SilverSneakers in
Tampa to offer this health and wellness benefit to our Medicare
Advantage members at no additional cost, this has been a strong and
sustaining partnership between two companies that are focused on
helping our members achieve their best health,” said Humana Retail
Segment President Alan Wheatley.
A 2013 survey of participating Humana plan members highlights
the effectiveness of SilverSneakers. According to the survey
results, 59 percent of Humana SilverSneakers participants reported
their health as excellent or very good, more than twice the
national average of 29 percent for the general older adult
population, reported by the Medicare Health Outcomes Survey
(HOS).
In addition, 81 percent of participants stated that they engage
in 30 minutes or more of moderately intense physical activity at
least three days per week, a testament to the program’s ability to
increase physical activity in older adults. Furthermore, 65 percent
of Humana respondents reported that their health did not limit them
in moderate activities, compared with the HOS national average of
40 percent for older adults.
“For more than 20 years, SilverSneakers has been instrumental in
increasing physical activity in older adults, with subsequent
outcomes and results demonstrating higher well-being and lower
health care costs,” said Alfred Lumsdaine, interim chief executive
officer of Healthways. “Our long-term partnership and extension of
our SilverSneakers relationship with Humana is a testament to the
enduring strength of our program and our successful collaboration
in positively transforming the lives of older adults
nationwide.”
SilverSneakers engages participants in more frequent strength
training, aerobic and flexibility exercise through access to a
variety of venues and programming designed specifically for older
adults. With nearly 60 percent of members participating in classes
with a friend, SilverSneakers also underscores the value of social
connectedness in improving well-being1.
SilverSneakers was founded in 1992 and is available to eligible
members through many Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement
carriers and group retiree plans. The Healthways fitness center
network offers convenient access to more than 16,000 participating
fitness and wellness facilities nationwide, plus other alternative
venues through the new FLEX program.
